I Smell a Subpoena Coming On
by emptywheel

Looks like Condi is daring Henry Waxman to subpoena her to testify before his committee. In response to his letter asking for a response to the many requests from him Condi has blown off over the years, the State Department's Assistant Secretary of Legislative Affairs wrote a letter back effectively flipping Waxman the bird. (Not surprising, really, since that's the only kind of diplomacy these Bushies appear to be good at.) I'll post an update with details below.

In response, Waxman wrote:

As I hope you can understand, because of the inadequacies of Mr. Bergner's response, the Committee will not withdraw the invitation for you to testify on April 18, 2007.

Given the nastiness of Bergner's reply, I suspect (as I've been predicting) Condi has no intention of complying with Waxman's requests. Henry, ready your subpoena pen.

Do you think there's a reason Condi doesn't want to testify under oath about her role in putting the "16 Words" in the 2003 SOTU?

Update: Mr. Bergner's many styles of flipping Waxman the bird.

So the answer to Henry about loyalty oaths? Yes, the WH was administering loyalty oaths before picking participants for international conferences.

2. Will Condi plead the fifth?
She might "accidentally" perjure herself.

5. Bush & Cheney would never allow it, look at the progress they've made getting Rove & Meirs to
testify under oath, Waxman wants Rice to answer questions about what she knew and Bush will stik to his guns about not under oath and no transcripts -- amazing how the Dems seem to be resting on their subpeona power and to scared to use it!

8. Another cheerfully informative and detailed post by Marcy.
Excellent.

Poor Condi never expected to have to answer to the people she works for (the American people) or their direct representatives. This is all most awkward.

Especially with war involved.

11. Subpoena her. Put her under oath. This goddamn
administration all think they are above the law and can do whatever they want. The United States is NOT yet a monarchy (despite Bush's best efforts!) No more "signing statements." No more Attorney Generals (supposedly the chief law officer of the land) saying publicly, "I'll THINK about maybe responding to a Congressional subpoena." I am sick of the utter arrogance and disdain for law and democracy. Drag their sorry asses in and if necessary, threaten them with jail.

Subpoena and date it. If she doesn't show up cite her with Contempt of Congress and arrest her. Bring her to Congress in handcuffs and question her Under Oath.

22. By STRATCOM, US SPACE COMMAND and NORAD "simulating"
aircraft crashing into buildings as aircraft were crashing into buildings-those GLOBAL GUARDIAN and VIGILANT GUARDIAN ones seemslikeadream? Or some other ones?

Maybe "Dr." Rice can get some diplomatic advice about total war from "Professor" Eliot Cohen, whom she "hired" last month to "replace" Philip Zelikow.

20. I don't think Waxman will hesitate to subpoena
I get the feeling he's not in the least bit afraid of the administration. He's been waiting WAY too long for this. REAL oversight - what a concept!

21. And last month Rice hired Eliot A. Cohen, and has Paul Wolfowitz's
girlfriend at the corrupted State Department-then there's recess appointed Ambassador to Belgium Sam Fox and there was the former Ambassador to Italy Mel Sembler (at the time of the "surfacing" in Italy of the known to be false Niger docs)...KICK

Btw, Professor Eliot A. Cohen is the leading academic exponent of Total War, as defined by Richard N. Perle et al.
