I know the police union thinks they need to protect all members from the rule of law, the United States Constitution, and valid criticism, but they're wrong and they give a bad name to all unions in general when they behave like this. The arrest of Lewis Gates jr. was unnecessary and only served to ease a police officers bruised ego of an incompetent police police officer.

1. Agree
Police are not supposed to escalate a situation, which they did - to say nothing of the race issue.
Good police do not need to cover for these idiots.

2. I think it probably was unnecessary police harassment
Obama probably thinks it too, but he admitted he didn't know exactly what happened so maybe he could left out the part where he judged what the cops did. The rest of what he said was very good imo.

17. He did what academics do. He admitted his friendship
and said he didn't have ALL the facts. And then, he ran them down very well.

It's about time someone in high office has the spine to call out racial profiling. Obama did very well on a question that has too long been avoided.

4. I don't He should have done a nice "No comment" when asked
for his opinion.

This particular incident has nothing to do with the office of the president.

10. The Constitution was violated? Now that's a bit of a stretch.
Don't you think The City of Cambridge is capable of handling this?

Silly me,I thought the President had quite a bit on his plate and making a public, primetime statement about an incident occurring to a friend of his is outside his purview.

6. I support him and add my criticism on top of it
So now the cops have to handcuff an old man just because the has the audacity to be angry about being treated like a criminal even after proving he was in his own house?

Fuck the cops!

7. I agree, even though I beleve Professor Gates acted inappropriately
The cop could have defused the situation by conducting himself professionally. Instead, he escalated the issue.

12. I think the media expected him to do what all they do regarding matters of race
close their eyes and imagine things are perfect.

Eric Holder was 100% right when he called us a nation of cowards regarding race.

14. I support him too.
We far too often pussyfoot around the issue of race in this country.

I thought Obama called it like it was.

The police acted stupidly.

I'm glad he said it.

22. Funny, because methinks that the ego was all with Gates...
And a Black officer (or whatever he is) says that this officer (who teaches racial profiling, d'oh) is very upstanding. So I guess you're against him, too...:eyes:
