Sometimes those of us on the Left need to speak out about things where we are a little too quiet.

I despise Osama bin Laden. He murdered 3,000 Americans of all races, gay and straight, old and young, poor and rich. And he bragged about it.

I'm glad that President Obama is taking on the Taliban who brutalize women and who have hidden this sack of shit murderer from justice.

So, for what it's worth, this Leftie says without any reservation: Osama bin Laden is an asshole.

But we keep trotting him out like a fictional bogeyman/devil, to justify a war and secure the region for an Oil pipeline across Afghanistan to move middle eastern oil to America. I'm really not sure what to think about Osama bin Laden. First, are we 100% certain that he was behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks? I mean, it's probably true, but I'd really like to hear the whole story - and not from the U.S. government.

Second, WHY would Osama do such a thing? Could it be in retaliation for the
countless thousands of Middle Easterners who have been murdered by the West?

One might still argue that it's wrong to murder civilians, under any circumstances. But, for whatever it's worth, I don't believe any children were killed in the 9/11 attacks. Contrast that with the carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Personally, I think it's hard to call Osama bin Laden an asshole without saying the same thing about people who murder children in other nations. Saying they were merely following orders doesn't cut it.

Then you've come to the wrong place and person.
But please do not forget that for a time, he was "OUR" asshole ... specifically trained and paid under the policies and authorization of many of the same people who ignored all evidence (at the very least) that 9-11 was a-brewing and then used that event to begin two quagmire wars, at least one of which is illegal and immoral, resulting in the deaths and displacement of millions. That is only a fraction of their illegality, corruption and crimes against their own countrymen. Think Katrina, for example.
So a lot of our homegrown assholes are every bit as bad, some even worse than he is/was, IMO. Sure, he's an easy target, as are the Taliban, but in focusing specifically on him, your statement also demonstrates more than a tinge of racism and xenophobia. I hope that is not what you intended.

My opinion on Usama bin Laden and his participation in the Afghan v USSR war; the nature of his role in regard to US intelligence then; and his role in what we call "terrorism" and he calls "holy war," are a bit different than most DUers.

Regardless, I think that he is/was of a character that I consider distinct from being an "asshole." However, people process some words differently than I do. I think he is/was intelligent, and combined the arts of being an engineer with extreme violence. The combination was fueled by an extremely violent interpretation of Islam, of the history of the Middle East, and of global current events.

At this point, I think there is a 50/50 chance that he is dead. If so, the most likely cause of death would be that some of our most skilled special forces were able to get to him in a manner that did not suggest assassination. An apparent death of "natural causes" would take from his potential legend, and would be reason for both sides to not report it. The vast majority of what the western world "knows" about him is myth, anyhow, so if our special forces did him in and doesn't report it, I think that's fine.
