Executives Receive One-Third of All Pay in the U.S.

Posted by Pat Garofalo, Think Progress at 5:00 AM on July 22, 2009.

Between 1979 and 2006, the inflation-adjusted after-tax income of the richest 1 percent of households increased by 256 percent.

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Social Security Administration data, more than one-third of all pay in the U.S. now goes to executives and other highly-paid employees:

****Executives and other highly compensated employees now receive more than one-third of all pay in the U.S., according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Social Security Administration data — without counting billions of dollars more in pay that remains off federal radar screens that measure wages and salaries. Highly paid employees received nearly $2.1 trillion of the $6.4 trillion in total U.S. pay in 2007, the latest figures available. The compensation numbers don’t include incentive stock options, unexercised stock options, unvested restricted stock units and certain benefits.

1. That's a shocker
I could have sworn it would have been the night shift workers at the convenience stores.

5. Thanks. I notice this part of the equation is always left out of the the rightwing's
whining about how the rich pay half of the taxes (or whatever number they're currently making up). In fact, they usually conflate two different percentages, saying that 1% of the people pay x% of the tax dollars without noting that the same 1% also make a similar percentage of the income as they pay in taxes. Our tax system is not as progressive as the right likes to pretend it is (they use the term "unfair" more than the term "progressive" but you get the point).

6. They talk about unfairness in the tax system, then turn right around and
talk about how there's no such thing as fair if someone finds themselves out of work.

7. And do the least work of any americans
This whole class farce is absurd. The idiot bankers saying that they and only they are qualified to do their "job" and that they can't do it for less than millions pisses me off so much. These guys are not the "brightest and best". Maybe the greediest and cruelest but nothing more.
