4. That's too bad, because California is the domino that will cause all the rest to fall...
Everyone was panicked about lending institutions, but California really IS "too big to fail"!

8. As did I. But then, I knew the facts about Davis being set up to take the fall for...
electricity deregulation, too.

Arnie had a part in that, didn't he? Didn't he have a secret meeting with Enron execs months before the recall?

9. I'm not either....
I never understood why people jumped to recall Gray Davis. He may not have been the star of a lot of b status action adventure films, but he tried to run the state competently at least.

Now here we sit waiting for the Governor of Buffoonery to just end his term and go away while our sales tax is 10% and he wants to raise it again. By law he can raise the sales tax for 90 days. Then the question goes to the voters as a ballot initiative and has to be passed by a 2/3 majority in order to carry. He is blithely assuming that as soon as the first 90 days ends he can raise it higher and count it as the beginning of a new 90 days without having to submit it for voter approval.

This really sucks. The whole thing. We have enough rich people in California that if they paid their fair share of state income tax, it would greatly alleviate many of the problems we are having. Seems like common sense to me, except the King of Comic Books in Sacramento is a rich, rich man who will not discommode the fellow members of his monied circle. Once he bragged in an interview that he and his wife were the richest couple in Hollywood. I think maybe we should let him foot the bill for the state. He has helped to cause a lot of our problems. Crazy maker.

10. The only tax measures that have a snowball's chance are the regressive ones.
Any others will be killed by the rethug minority because of the 2/3 rule. Any the regressive taxes will come back to bite dems in the butt, or so they fear. <SIGH> Meanwhile, the real people of California get screwed without a kiss yet again.

13. I know.....
that is one of the things that chafes the most. Recessive taxes like the sales tax or the car registration tax they tried to shove off on us a few years ago, (for that let the Dems in the Legislature take a bow) never really solve the fiscal problems.

We need some kind of parity in the tax laws on both the state and federal levels. The middle class pays for everyone. I don't mind helping out the poor. They have the need, and face it we are all probably only a paycheck or two from the streets, but I do resent subsidizing the rich. There may be nothing I can do about it except write letters and make calls to disinterested legislators, but I resent the heck out of it.

15. Yes. Corporate Welfare recipients have the nerve to complain about "welfare queens".
The wealthy in this country are the biggest of all the welfare queens, but since they feel entitled to everything they have, they are incapable of seeing it that way.

Is it any wonder The Family was able to attract members?

16. Yeah, the recall was a fiasco, across the board. Some tax clarification though -
the legislature sets the state tax rate (currently at 8.25% iirc), county and local taxes add to that rate depending on region. Not sure about the 90 day law you mention. ??? Do you mean the 90 day notice the legislature has to provide the Board of Equalization before any tax increase?
