I didn't tell him, by the way, when I gave him his raises. I completely forgot about them and they just appeared on his check. He came to me wondering what it was all about, and I told him, "Oh, I gave you a raise." He was ecstatic. The next time I increased his pay, he came to me again, and said he needed to speak with me privately, and told me I had made a mistake on his check. I told him, no, that's your rate of pay from now on; you got another raise.
Now, it's kind of cute. He never leaves my office without shaking my hand and thanking me over and over again. I just tell him, "Hey, you deserve it. You're worth it. You do a really good job for me." I've never seen anyone so happy about raises.
And, yes, our little company is very good to it's people. We pay well to those who work well. It is wonderful to be able to do this for people. One of my joys in life is to get a new hire in and see how nervous and worried they are about how they will be treated at this new job, and see their worries fall away, one by one, by the end of the day.
There are always those who will try to take advantage and get something for nothing. We don't keep those people very long. But the ones that we keep, they love their jobs.
We make sure of it.
