Our new prez said 'get 'er done'. Are they dragging their feet to get the biggest bang for the buck, aka spread the time out? This is far from over.

I don't know. For such a supposed 'done deal', they are carrying on, aren't they?!

6. I've watched a lot of confirmation hearings,
and I don't recall anything like what's going on now - the personal stuff - it's really a whole new ballgame. There were never things like "attitude" mentioned, and, since it was mostly all white guys - no, it WAS all white guys - no one had to compare their votes or histories with those of the same ethnic background.

I was thinking about the Haynsworth and how he got nailed because of his stock dealings, and since he was supposed to replace Abe Fortas, who'd had to resign over such ethical improprieties, the vote against him went along party lines, with, as I recall, a good number of crossover votes.

Carswell had an absolute dismal record on civil rights, and I remember that women's groups were up in arms about him. He got hammered faster and worse than Haynsworth.

But those men had spotty records - although both returned to their Federal judgeships after their nominations were defeated - and were not nearly in the same league as Sotomayor.

Which makes the way she's being treated by these Southern fuckers all the more outrageous. Her professional accomplishments leave these pricks in her dust, and she knows she's forced to go through this sham to get to the Supreme Court - which she'll do - but the nerve, the utter GALL of these inbred little fucks to address her in such a disrespectful and ugly manner must never be forgotten.

It's horrible. It's shameful. These Southerners are disgusting and should be ashamed of themselves. I am so pissed that they can pull this shit and get away with it.

Fuckers.........................

13. When I was a kid...
Growing up in innocent little Canada, I used to watch TV shows and movies from across the line, and see these southern types and their antics and think, "man, these guys sound really dumb, can it be that Americans from the south are really idiots like that in real life?" Then I met a guy from Alabama who came up to Canada to work with us, and he wouldn't talk to us, sit with us at lunch and was totally a prick. I asked one of the other fellows what his problem was, and he said, " He doesn't like Yankees" I was floored! I asked the fellow if he realized that the term "yankee" ended at the 49th parallell, and that we were a totally different country, and if he would like being called a Yankee, which is what we called all Americans, well he didn't like that at all. It was my first exposure to southern ignorance, and, sadly, I see now it is true, and it wasn't just "Hollywood". Yes, I watched that too today, and it made me sick. But, like I said before, it wasn't Bush's fault he screwed the country up, He's always been a screw-up! It was the people who put the "X" beside his name it two elections. Those people are the true idiots, same as the ones who voted in Sessions and some of those other little "inbreds" They make the good ol USA look bad!

26. And they'll keep voting them in,
because they do so love their Good Ole' Boys.

Shocking, isn't it, to come up against that kind of ignorance in real life?

The sad part about George W Bush is that he made people all over the world hate America. Not Americans - just our country. I think Obama has done a great job of turning that around, through sheer power of personality, and reassuring the world that a different kind of man is in charge. Bush was nothing but an embarrassment.

Well, he's also a homicidal, power-mad, delusional drunk, too, but at least he's gone.

People think those "Southern sheriff" characters are stereotypes - but they're not. They're absolutely true-to-life, and ain't that chillin'?

32. Sorry
About the multiple posts, I was having a bit of trouble posting this. Yes. People from different countries don't hate the American people, but they are fed up with the politics for sure.Since I moved here, I found people quite the same as anywhere else, and there is a sense of more freedom here. Bush did regress in the diplomacy with the rest of the world, let's hope Barack will reverse that somewhat.

4. Basically, yes.
Sotomayor's appointment won't even change the ideological makeup of the Court, considering that she's replacing Souter. It's like they're just phoning it in. Making sure their base knows that they know white people are the bestest.

11. Exactly right. For the 30+ Republicans who vote against her, at least half do so out of nutophobia
The desperation in talking obsessively about the one little "wise Latina" comment demonstrates how, basically, they've got nothing else to hang their criticism of her on it. Republicans are reflexively oppositional to all Democratic policies, almost regardless of the merits of any given issue. They're also reflexively tribal, they herd together by instinct regardless of what facts may dictate. In some ways you have to admire their discipline--particularly given the meltdown their national party and reputation are in. There was more than a bit of psychological truth to Newt Gingrich's assertion last spring that "we're surrounded by pagans." Intellectually, they're all hunkered down in the storm celler waiting for the tornado to pass.

Listening to Tues. afternoon.

I like her m.o. Hearing a fair amount of substance, more than I remember with Roberts.

The Cmte. will end the first round of questions tomorrow and then hold a closed session with Judge Sotomayor. Senators are allowed a second round.

10. That too
A sizable chunk of them probably do sincerely, truly feel and believe and experience that everything Obama does, is, and influences is an existential threat to western civilization or worse, though. Black liberal internationalist eloquent president who's tentatively liked by foreign countries? That's a worst-case scenario for people still stuck in the antebellum or who think the Cold War's still on.

From what I saw, only about a third of the questions were utterly craven. Much of it seems pro forma, if you allow that the form a Republican takes is a pissy little adolescent saying anything, regardless of logic, to protest being grounded.

19. It's All For the $$$$$
The GOOPers are expecting a show...some "spine". There are few who really believe her nomination can be defeated unless there's some major scandal or embarassment. Thus the right wing echo chamber has tried to amp up scandals...that's failed. All it's about now is keeping what's left of the base happy and hoping they'll throw money at these racists and mysogenists. This is prime time for goons like Sessions who now will get lots of speaking deals and campaign contributions for carrying the "white man's burden".

41. Dems have done it, too, but the tone isn't as nasty IMO
and when the democrats have been very hard on opposition nominees they seem to have a higher regard for the truth and don't just make things up. I guess it comes down to the audience. The republicans distort more, make crap accusations without basis, and spin unmercifully because the audience they are playing to--their right wing base--doesn't give a shit. All they care about is that their people can prove they've consumed the kool-aid--tax cuts, wave the flag, thump the bible and praise Rush and Reagan.

On our side, with plenty of DU and other evidence, we give a shit about facts and truth.

Post something here that is riddled with far out spin or incorrect facts and you are nailed immediately. On their sites, crazy shit is applauded. How the hell does the birther position even get any traction at all... their kool-aid drinkers don't give a shit so long as it attacks the president.
