Anyone Got A Screenshot of The Greatest Page From Before Unrec?
I never went there before the unrec flap started, so I can't judge whether it's better now, or worse now. I've seen it today though, and it looks fine to me. If it was better before unrec, then it must have been astonishingly awesome.

With all this flap over the new function, I realized I almost NEVER go to the greatest page...

3. I found it when someone told me
that a post of mine was on the Greatest Page.

I had to ask him how to get there.

4. Going from memory...
Rec if you think I'm cute

Rec if you think so and so is stupid.

Rec if <democrat name here> should resign.

Rec if you think the mods suck.

and so on, and so on and so on...

As I remember, that's what I saw on the so-called "Greatest Page"

before Unrecs were implemented.

27. It was like the high school cafeteria and most of us bemusedly
took any available seat and watched the others grapple for real estate.

I may miss the old GP after all.

than about the greatest page.

I have never seen DU to this point of just plain ugliness.

People who normally act rather sane are going nuts.

Some of us worry it is bringing out the worst in people who are given a new power and can't handle it.

Most of us write about what we have interest in .....if it gets to greatest, okay. and if not, okay.

Posts with a lot of work still sink very fast anyway.

But I have seen some ugly personalities shining forth here lately.

7. Do you think the Greatest page is better now, or worse now?
As for people not being able to "handle" the ability to vote 'yes' or 'no' - I'm just going to ignore that.

But I am curious what you think about the difference between Greatest-then and Greatest-now.

I never thought there was anything wrong with it before the change.

I did notice that one of my posts had far more recs than it might have gotten in the past, which was a surprise, since it was intended for a small audience.

9. As long as they don't end up in the greatest page, it's a positive step
Let them gnash their teeth and rend their hair in the regular forums, where they belong.

I give my opinion on it a lot.
But no one cares.
But any time you introduce a negative behavior the outcome will not be positive.
And UN is almost the definition of negative.

24. Worse than what?
It is all subjective...
What I think is senseless others might find interesting.
The thing is that i do not want to control what is on the greatest page or any other page because I believe in free expression,
topics posted on any page do not upset me..and if they should I will post my condemnation to them in plain view for all to see.
And in this process of answering stupid or irritating posters real dialog can develope....and that is why I am here, to have real dialog.

And I am not jellos of people who get on the greatest page for whatever reason...if they have 5 buddies that think there stuff is great so be it...it just opens that POV to critical and comentary....a good thing not a bad one.

I think the problem this was meant to solve was much adieu about nothing,

15. Uh, how do I see it?
The Greatest Page?

Is it like a major page thing here on teh DU?

I mostly only look at the Latest Threads. Is there a way to put the Latest Threads on the Greatest Threads or vice-versa so I can find it?

23. It's the Star icon in the top row of each DU page, 2nd from the left
If you want the page, it's always (I think) available with one click, wherever on DU you are - for instance, it's still there as an option on the screen I'm typing this reply in.

18. YES!

I am seeing perfectly sane threads getting unrec'ed with a whole bunch of low-count posters talking about how much they enjoy it, and trolls and future tombstones abusing it.

I surf a lot on other sites (chanology, anonymous) that tolerate a certain amount of trolling, so I am used to the principle of it, but damn it, NOT HERE! I come here for intelligent adult conversation, not a fucking high school popularity contest and troll fest.

Unrec has brought out ugly here and it is not becoming. If we must have ratings, let us be like kos where every single comment is rated up or down and numbers on both sides are shown. Even better, show who unrecs. I bet it is the same bunch of trolls and contrary bastards. It's too easy to do when you're anonymous.

Thanks, Mad for voicing that so well.

25. I liked it just fine before
And I see DU'ers acting like total assholes right now.

So I'd say, 'no'.

But I'm sure it's all subjective.

I never had a problem sorting the wheat from the chaff on that page but I guess some people do.

it contains far fewer posts with which I disagree. If I were looking for self-affirmation I suppose I'd like it better.

26. Indeed, I do.
Check out this view:

Minority opinions (ones that generate significant discussion and debate) like the one that appears at the top of this page will never appear there again with the unrec function. That is, in fact, by design. The Greatest Page has become a happy, peaceful, liberal news feed. And that's fine, unless you think DU is a "discussion" forum.

As I said to Skinner in response to another post, I think that my concerns can be entirely eliminated with the addition of a "Hottest" page (a page like the Greatest Page that ranks threads by the sum of recommends and unrecommends with, perhaps, a 30 total vote minimum, and with an aggregate sum of less than +5--because threads that are +5 or higher appear on the Greatest Page). If there were a nice little icon at the top of the forum, say between Greatest and Lobby, it would address my concerns perfectly. With such a page, minority opinion OPs that generate lots of responses would still appear in an easy to access place and would get significant attention, but they would not "poison" the Greatest Page and would not project from DU's home page an opinion that the majority did not share. That addition, I think, would satisfy both camps in this particular debate.

But that's just my opinion. YMMV.

:dem:

28. Suggestion: sort a forum by thread start time, and then go back a few pages
and then note what threads were getting the recs.

I did it for GDP, just to get a count, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6048444&mesg_id=6050669

but anyone can look for themselves, and get an idea or what got recommendations, and how many. GDP is well suited to this (I'd suggest E&OA too, and some of the higher traffic topic forums); GD has had so many rec/unrec threads, and Michael Jackson before that, that I suspect you won't get much cof an idea from it. LBN I can't decide on - it's harder to know why people recommend threads there; are they 'news you should know' or 'news that will cheer you up' or 'new that supports my point of view' threads?
