Coleman's Handling of Recount Battle Darkens His Political Future

July 10, 2009 12:12 PM | Permalink | Comments (2)

If former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman has designs on the governor's office that fellow Republican Tim Pawlenty is vacating in 2010, he didn't help himself with the way he handled the recount battle with newly-minted Sen. Al Franken, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted July 7-8.

Voters said by 54 percent to 26 percent that Coleman's handling of the recount made it less likely they'd support him for governor or some other office while 20 percent said it made no difference. Coleman is viewed unfavorably by 52 percent of voters and favorably by 38 percent with 11 percent not sure.

Matched in a general election contest against three Democrats, Coleman trails two and leads one.

Former Democratic Sen. Mark Dayton leads Coleman 41 percent to 39 percent with 20 percent undecided; Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak leads Coleman 43 percent to 37 percent with 19 percent undecided, and Coleman leads Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher by 42 percent to 34 percent with 24 percent undecided.

"Clearly the recount saga damaged Norm Coleman's chances at being elected to office again in Minnesota," said PPP's Dean Debnam. "You have to wonder how much more goodwill he would have been able to earn with voters in the state if he had decided to take the high road and concede six months ago."

7. But, before he can do that,
he's still got over $40,000 in student loans to repay.

Can you imagine?

10. How is the asshole? Don't the loans have to be paid back in about 10 years?

11. I don't know the rules -
but I know that that debt was listed on Coleman's last financial filing with the Senate.

Impressive, no?

Check this out - http://www.politicsinminnesota.com/2009/jun12/3308/another-reason-norm-might-go-he-needs-make-money#comment-712 - and scroll down to the item titled "Terminated” Coleman’s Financial Disclosure Form."

Some interesting stuff there................... :)

8. I would think that his electoral past would darken his political future
He lost the 1998 gubernatorial election to Jesse Ventura, he nearly lost the 2002 Senate election to Walter Mondale, and he lost the 2008 Senate election.

That's 2.75 losses out of 3 in the last 10 years.

They should face consequences when they pull such stunts like he did.

An Ensign staff position would be sweet justice.;

12. And, really, what did he gain from it?

Besides, "two million, 92 thousand and some change$$$$" in debt?

I remember Mark Dayton as being a good Senator..so he's running for Gov?
