My response to a wingnut who thinks liberals are ruining America (but he doesn't hate me)
I don't care what you think of me. That's not why I am here. I come here to educate myself and engage in discussions. I am not the least bit concerned if anyone hates me.

I am just glad I don't know anyone who believes what you believe in real life. I was raised in a large all Democratic family that was always active in local and national politics. We knocked on doors for our candidates and we never failed to vote in any election. We also often voted for Republicans even though we were all registered Democrats. We always felt it was important to serve our community and political service was to be respected, regardless of which party the elected officials belonged to. Both of our parents and all of my siblings and most of my cousins are employed in helping professions, teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers. We were bought up to be positive contributors to our community and that the community as a whole had a responsibility to those less capable among us.

Since I am still in a helping profession and still involved in community service, I am surrounded by Democrats, mainly liberals. I honestly don't know any conservatives well, other than a few I worked with. So the hate from the right is something I see online and not much in my world.

About 20 years ago, the republican party started becoming hateful. It was no longer just different to be a liberal Democrat, we were considered evil. Because we had a different opinion. I noticed it when Bob Dole ran for president and when Newt Gingrich organized his campaign in Congress against America.

It's just gotten worse since then. I don't hate conservatives, I just find them to be selfish and misguided. And I am adamantly opposed to giving them any more power in this country.

It's one thing to be fiscally conservative and a proponent of smaller govt. But it's another thing entirely to take food away from hungry children and to deprive people of health care.

Believing that we all have a responsibility to care for one another doesn't make me evil or stupid. It makes me a caring person. And I don't care if you hate me. I know that what I believe and what I live is right. My conscience is clear. That's all that matters.

Curious to know what the Republican said in return?

2. No response yet. Here is what he posted that I was responding to:
I don't hate you,

I just don't give a rat's behind for liberals and their stupidity that is driving America into the ground. If you're a liberal, then it applies to you. I don't care what you want, I don't care what you think, I don't want to waste any more time in my life debating people who don't know a fact from an opinion, I only want to vote liberals out of office.

That's simple enough for you to understand, yes? Can I make it any clearer? While I don't personally hate you, I don't respect liberals, I've seen what they've done and what they're trying to do, and no amount of obfuscation, equivocation and straw-dog arguments on their behalf will EVER change my mind.

Go ahead and yammer away all you like. America is now moving away from Obama and his policies, and that's irrefutable, given even the Blue Dog Democrats' refusal to be led like lambs to the slaughter on the health care reform bill - but I don't like them, either, because these sheep voted for the stimulus en masse.

3. You are so much more patient than I am...
Your response was light years beyond his understanding but I hope some part of his reptile brain hears it and thinks on it for awhile.

4. They recently changed this particular blog
They no longer list recent replies on the front page. You have to actually scroll through the topics to find replies. That has cut down considerably on the hate from the right. They have all complained about it, which is funny, because the implication is they aren't intelligent enough to find the topics where they posted their hateful crap.

Anyway, this guy is one of the few left who is still posting there. And he is one of the more eloquent, believe it or not.

9. When you compare what Liberals have done for our country with what
Conservatives have done you will find a long list and a very short list. Just ask yourself, what have the Conservatives done other than ruin the economy? Teddy Roosevelt gave us the National Park system and that was it.

15. hah! Teddy Roosevelt wasn't a conservative!
Though he was a Republican. Conservatives don't even get credit for the National Park system.

6. He dismissed you at hand.
He said he didn't hate you, and then he said he didn't respect you.
I can't tell the difference sometimes.

Down in here Florida, I encounter people from time to time that I swear are from a different planet, much less a different country.

You keep on doing what you do.
And keep on telling us what you think about it.

8. Selfishness personified.
Lots of "I", not one "We".

Republicans, mean, greedy, selfish. It's their mantra.

16. That is so true
I noticed at the tea bag rallies, so many of their signs had "I" ME" or "MY" on them. It really is all about them, what they want, what they need. No wonder they are so afraid of socialism.

Thank you for your tireless efforts to bring the local Kansas news of and to reaction Dr Tiller's murder to our DU community as well as your activism in your own backyard. I greatly respect your efforts. I live in the "peoples republic of Minneapolis" LOL, where being a liberal is easy breezy and takes no courage, but I know it is a struggle for many in areas of the country where it can be challenging and outright dangerous to be a liberal. Thanks! :hi:

10. Is 20 year ago when "liberal" became a dirty word?
People treat liberal as if it is one of the words that Carlin couldn't say on TV. It is something that has evolved with that hate you speak of.

13. No it was probably longer ago than that
I just noticed it about 20 years ago. I remember when Clinton was elected, I thought well phew now liberals are okay again. Little did I know. LOL
