I'm tired of being treated like a nigger by the media.
So, the latest in a long line of racist filfth to emerge from the geniuses behind the Imus in the Morning Show was directed at the players on the Rutgers University women's basketball team. "Nappy-headed ho's" he called them.

WFAN Radio and MSNBC, Imus's radio and TV broadcast homebases, have issued the usual expressions of shock, and have promised to put Imus on a tighter leash going forward.

As an African-American who has had to put up with shit like this from Imus and others of his ilk over the years, I say, "Too. Fucking. Late."

I am with the National Association of Black Journalists; Imus must go.

It might be one thing if this had been the first time anything like this had been heard on Imus's show.

Or the second time.

Or the third.

Or the forth.

Or the fifth.

But the fact is Imus has an extensive history of making or allowing blatantly racist commentary and "jokes" on his morning radio show.

Like calling Venus and Serena Williams "animals."
Or calling national journalist Gwen Ifill "the cleaning lady."
Or calling national journalist Bob Herbert a "quota hire."
Or likening the appearance of certain black NBA players to "apes."
Or referring to residents of Harlem as "moolingans."
Or referring to the black wife of former Secretary of Defense William Cohen as a "big-haired ho."

Not mention that he was basically forced to admit in a 1998 "60 Minutes" interview that he had hired a producer specifically to do "nigger jokes."

Chicago Tribune columnists Clarence Page once forced Imus on his own show to promise to drop the racist references.

As we can see, Imus has a problem keeping some promises.

That's why, as far as I'm concerned, Imus has long used-up his chances for redemption. His show should be terminated. Immediately.

Further, entities which sponsor "Imus in the Morning" need to be put on notice that they are going down as sponsoring a multi-repeat offending racist program. And it will not be forgotten.

******************************************************************
From Michael Savage referring to inner-city children as "ghetto slime,"

to Rush Limbaugh saying, "The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies,"

to Bob Grant, who in hanging up on black callers would dismiss them with, "I don't need my toilets cleaned today!" or "I don't need my windows washed today!"

to Doug "Greaseman" Tracht, who, joking about the lynching of James Byrd, played a snippet of a Lauren Hill record, then cracked, "No wonder people drag them behind trucks,"

to Bill O'Reilly, who once cracked about a black singing group that was late for a live performance he was hosting, "I hope they're not in the parking lot stealing our hubcaps,"

to William Bennett, musing that "you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down,"

to Niel Boortz, who described the appearance of African-American Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney as like a "ghetto slut,"

nationally-syndicated racist radio hosts have gotten away with a ton of crap over the years. They rarely suffer any significant repercussions, thereby enabling the next display of bigotry.

No more. MSNBC, WFAN, and Imus himself can all stuff their apologies and perfunctory expressions of dismay. They must end his reign of terror. That is the only response from them that will be acceptable. The ONLY response. Otherwise, they are racist-coddlers. Period.

I'm tired of being treated like a nigger by the media. Imus screwed-up big time. He must not survive this.

So help me God, he will not survive this!

Let's face it, if they're going to allow a known racist to keep on the show, they're going to do whatever is necessary to make it look like it is acceptable.

I agree w/ the original poster of this thread: This shit makes me sick, and it's time to stop it. If THIS kind of thing doesn't "help the terrorists", nothing does! It's just showing America to be a hate-filled, no moral values, no decency kind of place to allow this to go on.

156. Down to 52% yes now :-( . (NT)
Imus has been around for ages (decades) since the
time he was a NYC "morning man". And this sort of
"humor" has always been his stock-in-trade since
his earliest days. Given the fact that his influence
has only grown, one can only assume that his corporate
backers and sponsors approve of all of this.

180. You're so right
I remember when he was a top-40 radio jock. I was listening in horrified fascination one morning when he played a song called "My Ding-A-Ling" (I think by Chuck Berry?) over and over and over until the station management ordered him to stop. But being the horse's ass he is, Imus read management's message on the air and deliberately played it again, and was summarily fired.

What he said about the Rutgers women basketball players was in my mind thousands of times worse than playing "My Ding-A-Ling" -- it was racist, sexist, ugly, and demeaning. It had no place on the public airwaves, and the FCC should hit MSNBC with a huge fine.

Imus should have been fired immediately. It amazes me that MSNBC has kept him on, when WABC-AM sacked him for the Ding-A-Ling song back in the early 70s.

The question on the poll now is:

Should Don Imus' apology be enough to end the controversy over his remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team?

212. Same question?
The poll now asks "should Imus' apology be enough to end the controversy?" and 53% responded YES - I'm horrified. I have never listened to any talk radio and had no idea it was so bad - I'm sorry I've been so oblivious! I can't believe they haven't fired that nasty, stupid bigot already. This is so depressing.

182. We need to start HAMMERING congress to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, and
to pass a law that makes this kind of remark ILLEGAL on any of our airwaves. After all, they treat every populist, liberal idea in a similar fashion. Why should over HALF of all citizens in this country (Democrats) be treated on OUR airwaves as if we're all foolish, or less than bright, or socially unacceptable?

There has to be a backlash for the racist, misogynist, backward thinking that is being SOLD to the American people over our airwaves, more often than the damned "swiffer duster". WHO is paying to advertise racism and anti-democratic-party shit over and over again?

This latest Imus remark may be what we need to "catapult the propaganda" OUT of the FCC.

That should be our mantra while zeroing in on the likes of Imus, et al.

This issue can be the catalyst for change, but we must pressure Congress to adapt and enforce hate speech laws in order to control this unwanted language and behaviour on TV and in print.

105. this white guy will remember that in depth of Bush popularity, black caucus stood up for us
In the last six years, John Conyers and Cynthia McKinney represented me a hell of a lot more often than anyone white in Congress and I will remember that they stood up for democracy when it could have cost them their careers or even lives.

Does that mean that I will never say anything that anyone anywhere would consider racist? Probably not.

But I will consider African Americans "us" not "them" for the rest of my life even when someone occasionally says "it's just how white folks are."

41. FWIW, it's not OK. I just think the racism was a double dose, so it got more attention.
Would Imus have called a group of white women "ho's"? Somehow I doubt it. If anything, it was racism in the service of sexism, or maybe vice versa -- aiding and abetting, as you suggest.

(I would never listen to his program, and I haven't seen the quote in context, but JOOC -- what kind of man gets his jollies by dissing a college basketball team in morally insulting terms? Criticize their playing if you want, but as for Imus' comment -- WTF ?!?)

and oh -- in case you don't quite realize it, "ho" isn't the only gender slur that can be used against women. Maybe he wouldn't have called them that -- but he would've had some sexist remark.

101. Great, let's accuse him of stuff he didn't do. That'll get real traction.
Oh, and ... "in case you don't quite realize it," ... could you PLEASE put that more condescendingly next time? There's nothing in my remarks to even suggest I was unaware there's more than one insult possible against women, nor any call to stoop to such churlish snarking.

Save your venom for Imus, not someone who basically said his remarks were BOTH racist AND sexist.

132. FWIW
I don't know about slander or shame or what history you two have....

It seems to me that what MLF did was point out that the sexist aspect of "nappy header hos" went unmentioned in a very detailed and excellent and outraged OP. The way she put that lack of mention and "apparently OKAY TO YOU" may have been the misstep that raised the hackles. The basic point remains-- with or without assumptions about who cares about what.... she began with "I'm with ya, but I sure do wish..."

We're in this together. And our brothers/sisters who are remarking in outrage about blatant, serial, broadcast racism may not want to be reminded that they haven't commented on the sexist aspect of the offending remarks.

The OP gave a detailed list of various slurs and yes, the sexism is in there-- but it is unremarked. It is invisible, part of the mix.

Some of us may notice that it is unremarked and think that it needs to be-- some of us may assume our own sensitivity is enough and that it doesn't need to be.

Maybe this is a good point to agree that bigotry is bigotry and gender and racial discrimination often go together: as in "nappy headed hos."

Like MLF said:

"It's not as if racism is Imus's only sin, ya know? It's not as if sexism doesn't aid and abet racism and vice versa, ya know?"

"But the sexism is invisible...."

Okay so far.......

" - apparently OKAY TO YOU."

Them's fightin' words. It's not necessarily "okay to" anyone, but it may be unnoticed, overlooked, ignored.

"And it's NOT OKAY that nobody bothers to note it and mention it and object to it."

Maybe she went too far, to condemn as "not okay" that it is invisible, assumed as part of the mix, not remarked in a detailed, well-written OP. But like she said at the start, "I'm with ya, but I sure do wish......."

that he called his wife a "Green hoe." That is not acceptable either.
She may not be African American but she is a woman and that is wrong!

Imus saw it as something that he could hang his hat on if he called his wife a hoe.

228. I watched a brief soundbite on Rev. Sharpton's show with guest Don Imus
Rev. Sharpton introduced his daughter to Mr. Imus and asked, "Would you call my daughter a 'nappy-headed ho'?"

"No," Imus said.

That's right. He went on to say something like calling the women on the basketball team nappy-headed hos was as disrespectful as if he had said the same thing about his own daughter. And that every one of those young ladies is somebody's daughter or sister and they did not deserve to be referred to as such...

I thought Rev. Sharpton was at his absolute best this morning.

Not that it seemed to bother Kerry before... after all, Imus has been making racist remarks toward African Americans and Arabs for quite awhile.

96. Important story on Imus in NY Times...."With Imus, They Keep Coming Back"
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/09/business/media/09carr.html?_r=1&ref=business&oref=slogin

“Imus in the Morning” is scheduled to start this morning like any other, with Don Imus and his crew cracking wise about the weekend’s events, riffing off the news and chatting with Evan Thomas, one of Newsweek’s top guns. Later Tom Oliphant, Washington author and former op-ed columnist for The Boston Globe, will check in for some political talk.

Given that Mr. Imus spent part of last week describing the student athletes at Rutgers as “nappy-headed ho’s,” you might think he’d have trouble booking anyone, let alone A-list establishment names. But Mr. Imus, who has been given a pass for this sort of comment in the past, also generously provides airtime to those parts of the news media and political apparatus that would generally be expected to bring him to account.

(snip)
He is, to borrow one of the show’s metaphors, a lawn jockey to the establishment. Few politicians, big or small, pass up a chance to bump knees with Mr. Imus, in part because his show is one of the few places where they can talk seriously and at length about public issues. Senator John Kerry has stopped by. Senator John McCain is on frequently. And Senators Joseph I. Lieberman and Joseph R. Biden are part of a legion eager to sit in the guest chair.

NBC News uses “Imus in the Morning” to promote the brands of Tim Russert, Andrea Mitchell and David Gregory. Tom Brokaw was a frequent guest, and his replacement, Brian Williams, has been sanctified by the I-man, as they call him. Chris Matthews from MSNBC has appeared, as have anchors and journalists from CNN and CBS and, on the print side, by reporters and editors from Newsweek and popular opinion columnists from The New York Times.

To the wealthy and wicked, we're all "niggers." Red and yellow black and white, we're all chattel in their sight. You have to pony up to the table with some serious billions before they're willing to deal you in. If you clean up nice, you're the household help. If you don't clean up, it's out to the fields with you.

201. Good Observation JReaper...
While we are on the subject...There's a whiff of classism as well...I don't listen to Imus much, but isn't he a little proud of his riches? When someone has a 'rockstar' lifestyle for awhile, they tend to start drawing the 'us and them' line at zeroes in bank accounts. These girls were not only predominantly black (and he called the white girls 'wannabes'!) but they were also lower to middle class and obviously not supermodel rich-n-famous material. These women will go on and have fulfilling professional lives, but they are not going to be 'superstars' thus below Imus's notice. As for the rest of the damn jocks, I've deplored them all and resent having to listen to them in my place of work when someone insists. Howard Stern is unfortunately the best of the lot...at least he seems to respect his wife and she seems to be tough enough not to allow herself to be called a 'ho'.

Just play the music and shut your piehole, you tedious ass.

103. As a white woman raised in a very racist rich town in Connecticut
Edited on Sun Apr-08-07 09:42 PM by Jennicut
this makes me sick! Imus is a turd. Right on par with Michael Richards and certain Rethugs. I will never forget an incident 12 years ago in my hometown of Cheshire, Ct. I invited home a black male friend from the inner city (Bridgeport)that I had met at Central Connecticut State University. He was a really nice guy, his father was a pastor and he was raised to be polite and courteous and he was intelligent and a great artist. Well naive 19 year old me decides to take a stroll down the local walking path and all we got was stares from middles aged housewives and others. Whispers and snickers were heard behind our backs. When I turned around, they stopped. It made a mark on me. I was disgusted. We live in 2007 and blatant racism like Don Imus's just cannot be tolerated anymore. Fire his old wrinkled drugged out/alcoholic ass.

113. I noticed you didn't mention Howard Stern.
Undoubtedly you could come up with something to hit Stern with. But while Stern has made race jokes, they haven't been insulting race jokes. He's been more a commentator on the state of race, rather than someone who pushes a racist agenda. (IMHO, of course. I'm not a fanboy of Stern and haven't heard him since he went to Pay Radio, but this is what I remember.)

Also, Stern has hated Imus since he had to work with him at WNBC. (In the movie Private Parts he included a brief encounter with Imus, played by an actor, that showed Imus to be an outright bastard. The movie didn't mention Imus's drug use; I think it was mentioned in Stern's book.) It would be good for Ol' Lizard Face, as Stern calls him, to hit the street and try to find a broadcasting job with his reputation wrecked.

The corporate media just loves to act as if Imus, Coulter, LImbaugh and the rest are actually good people, they just sometimes go a little too far. Meanwhile, someone like Michael Moore is treated like some kind of fringe freak, even though the majority of Americans agree with most of his opinions.

Great post, and keep up the pressure until Imus is fired. Enough of this shit.

126. Mister Nigga
(by Mos Def)

Say ho everybody say ho
bop po quay yo
I said shake your soul like way back in the day yo
bop po quay yo everybody say ho
Everybody say hooooo hooo
Everybody say ho
And check it out now

Who is cat eating out on the town
And make the whole dining room turn they head 'round
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
He got the speakers in the trunk
With the bass on crunk
Who be riding up in the high rise elevator
Other tenants who be praying they ain't the new neighbor
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
They try to play him like a chump
Cause he got what they want

He under thirty years old
But already he's a pro
Designer trousers slung low
Because his pockets stay swoll'
Could afford to get up and be anywhere he go
VIP at the club, backstage at the show
(Yes y'all) the best crib, the best clothes
Hottest whips on the road
Neck and wrists on froze (say word)
Checks with O's o-o-o-o-ohs
Straight all across the globe
Watch got three time-zones
Keep a digital phone up to his dome
Two assistants
Two bank accounts, two homes
One problem
Even with the O's on his check
The po-po stop him and show no respect
"Is there a problem, officer?"
Damn straight, it's called race
That motivate the jake (woo-woo) to give chase

Say they want you successful, but that ain't the case
You livin' large, your skin is dark
They flash a light in your face

Now, who is cat dining out on the town
maitre'd wanna take a whole year to sit him down
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
He got the speakers in the trunk
With the bass on crunk
Now, who is the cat at Armani buying wares
With the tourists who be asking him, do you work here?
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
Nigga Nigga

Yo, the Abstract with the Mighty Mos Def
White folks got it muffled across beneath they breathe
"I didn't say it.."
But they'll say it out loud again
When they deal with their close associates and friends
You know
Sneak it in with they friends at the job
Happy hour at the bar
While this song is in they car
And even if they've never said it, lips stay sealed
Their actions reveal how their hearts really feel
Like, late night I'm on a first class flight
The only brother in sight
The flight attendant catch fright
I sit down in my seat, 2C
She approach officially talkin' 'bout, "Excuse me"
Her lips curl up into a tight space
She don't believe that I'm in the right place
Showed her my boarding pass,
And then she sort of gasped
All embarrassed put an extra lime in my water glass
An hour later here she come now walking past, like
"I hate to be a pest but my son would love your autograph"
Wow...it's Mr. Nigga

They stay on Nigga patrol on American roads
And when you travel abroad they got world Nigga laws
Some folks get on a plane go as they please
But I go over seas and I get over siezed, like
London-Heathrow, me and my people
They think that illegal's a synonym for Negro
Far away places, customs agents flagrant
They think the dark face smuggle weight in they cases
Bags inspected, now we arrested
Attention directed to contents of our intestines
Urine-nalyis followed by X-rays
Interrogated and detained to damn near the next day
No evidence, no apology and no regard
Even for the big American rap star
For us especially, us most especially,
A Mr Nigga VIP jail cell just for me
"If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake
Just got some shoe-polish, painted my face"
They say they want you successful
But then they make it stressful
You start keeping pace, they start shaking up the tempo

Now, who is cat riding out on the town
State trooper want to stop him in his ride, pat him down
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
He got the speakers in the trunk
With the bass on crunk
Now, who is the cat with the hundred dollar bill
They gotta send it to the back to make sure the shit is real
Mr Nigga, Nigga Nigga
Nigga Nigga Nigga

You can laugh and criticize Michael Jackson if you wanna
Woody Allen, molested and married his step-daughter
Same press kicking dirt on Michael's name
Show Woody and Soon-Ye at the playoff game, holding hands
Sit back and just bug, think about that
Would he get that type of dap if his name was Woody Black?
OJ found innocent by a jury of his peers
They been fucking with that Nigga for last five years
Is it fair, is it equal, is it just, is it right?
Do they do the same shit when the defendant face is white?
If white boys doing it, well, it's success
When I start doing, well, it's suspect
Don't hate me, my folks is poor, I just got money
America's five centuries deep in cotton money
You see a lot of brothers caked up, yo straight up
It's new, Y'all living off of slave traders paper
But I'm a live though, yo I'm a live though
Putting up the big swing for my kids yo
Got my mom the fat water-front crib yo
I'm a get her them pretty bay windows
I'm a cop a nice home to provide in
A safe environment for seeds to reside in
A fresh whip for my whole family to ride in
And if I'm still Mr Nigga, I won't find it surprising

130. I don't really see the difference between Imus and Stern. They're both shock-jocks. I did a quick
search on some of Howard Stern's "jokes" over the years. Here's a few. But Imus probably belongs on satellite radio where he doesn't have to worry about censorship, but at the same time isn't permitted to use that type of "humor" on the public airwaves. Just my opinion.

Howard Stern - 1/31/97
Re: Mark Fuhrman
"So what, the guy's a racist.
99% of America is racist.
Everybody hates the Jews and the blacks."

Howard Stern - 2/4/97
"You need a new piece of ass every once in a while"
"I was ready to light fires.
I was like a black man ready
to burn my own apartment"

Howard Stern - 2/19/97
"Is heroin a great drug or what?"

Question : Why aren't there more blond haired black people
Answer : How dumb do you want them to be?

143. Do liberals/Democrats in general get treated like "niggers"
by the media?

Please understand that I am NOT trying to take away from the seriousness of the OP by over-generalizing the specific complaint. I've watched Imus maybe once, and thought he was obnoxious although he didn't make any racist remarks on that particular occasion.

But honestly, until I opened the thread and read the OP, I couldn't tell from the subject line if an actual black person had posted it or if it was someone else who was tired of being treated like a "nigger" for any reason. I had in mind the Lennon/Ono song (mentioned in this thread), "Woman is the Nigger of the World."

It seems to me that all of us on DU have some cause to complain, even if not to the same degree as the OP.

I don't listen to him or Stern, or Limbaugh, or any of these other crackpots who are clearly there for shock value, which appears to be the only way they get attention. 155. I agree with everything said about Imus, but can you explain to me
why the black community has numerous comedians, rap artists and celebrities who routinely call black women "bitches and hos?" Why is it acceptable for a black person to call another black person "nigga," but if I used that nasty word I'd be dubbed a racist? Imus deserves whatever he gets, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look beyond him.

Thanks for this post. And you are right. It is past time for him to retire from our airwaves. And his producer along with him.

Words do influence and encourage people to excuse others behavior.

184. NPR played the whole exchange this morning, and I have to say ...
this man was not thinking AT ALL. His remarks were thoughtless in the fullest sense of that word -- there was neither intelligence nor care behind them; neither his intellect nor moral sense was engaged. Whatever random BS was generated by the thermal noise in the neurons of his brain, he opened his mouth and blurted it out (of course, that's the whole schtick of "shock jocks"). That's not responsible, and someone who's not capable of behaving responsibly in front of an on-air microphone shouldn't be allowed near one. The public airwaves are public property (licensed in the name of the public at large) and even free citizens with all the rights in the world should at least feel some obligation to behave responsibly on air -- at the VERY least to the degree of not inflicting harm, and Imus can't even manage that. Time to take the microphone away.

188. If Tom Joyner or another minority host used vicious stereotypes...
Edited on Mon Apr-09-07 10:31 AM by brg5001
The outrage would be everywhere and that host would be gone. But these right-wing (primarily White) nutcases can carry on their racist rants and their sick fans just cheer right along (hence the CNN poll). Just imagine what would happen the moment a leading nonwhite host used the perjorative term "CRACKER" and hurled it at one of the right's favorite leaders, like Dick Cheney. (Of course, that's not in Tom Joyner's heart and he would never do that. I'm just using that as a hypothetical situation.)

Don Imus ceased being interesting or entertaining many years ago. He's a washed-up AM deejay from the seventies who just hung around long enough to get a talk radio contract and airtime on MSNBC.

We do need the equal time rule to counter him (and his fellow addled gasbags) in a setting where THEY DO NOT CONTROL THE MICROPHONE.

Now, it's time to do more than go after the sponsors -- the only thing that makes the big boys quake are OBSCENITY complaints. One idiot in South Florida complained on behalf of some right-wing KKKristian group about a silly Howard Stern bit and it subjected Clear Channel (which owned the local station where the "offensive" content was broadscast) to a massive fine. Note that the company that owns the local broadcaster is fined...not the network that distributes the content.

Imagine what thousands of us could do against the REAL OBSCENITY -- the dozens of Limbaugh wannabes who pollute our airwaves with vile, hateful filth directed at minorities and anyone else who doesn't share their prejudices.

Here's a tip: You must complain about the actual STATIONS that broadcast this sewage...that means the affiliates. It's time to file thousands of obscenity complaints against LOCAL STATIONS that carry the full plate of filth -- Imus/Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity/Boortz/Weiner (aka Savage). Let's dick them before they continue to dick us. Plus, let's savor the irony of calling their "lifestyles" and their broadcasts OBSCENE and INDECENT and demanding that FCC "clean up America's airwaves". Use the system created by the KKKristian Right against their favorite talkers!

190. Question has changed
CNN changed the original poll question from should Imus be fired? Yes or no?

to

Should Don Imus' apology be enough to end the controversy over his remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team? Yes or No.

Interesting how that simple change has made it seem as though 55% now agree with his remarks and/or think it is no big deal.

http://www.cnn.com/ Look on the right toward the bottom of the page.

I wonder what happened to the original poll numbers? Did they just roll over all the yes and no answers into the new poll?

Imus: "CBS Bosses Money-Grubbing Jews"

Hot on the heels of Mel Gibson and Michael Richards, radio personality Don Imus let loose with his own barrage of antisemitic vitriol on the November 30 broadcast of his “Imus in the Morning” show.
Article tools

That morning, the program, which is produced in New York by WFAN and simulcast on MSNBC, was going to host a group of gospel singers known as the Blind Boys of Alabama. In anticipation of their appearance, Imus recalled reservations voiced by station supervisors prior to an earlier appearance by the group.

“I remember when I first had ’em on a few years ago,” Imus said. “The Jewish management at, whoever we work for, CBS, were bitchin’ at me about it.” WFAN is a subsidiary of WCBS radio.

“We had a meeting in my office,” Imus continued. “They were furious, but of course I don’t care what they say and never have.”

At this point, the show’s executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, a regular on-air presence, said of the Blind Boys, “Even if you wear a beanie, how can you not love these guys?”

“I tried to put it in terms that these money-grubbing bastards could understand,” Imus replied. “I said: ‘They’re handicapped, they’re black and they’re blind. How do we lose here?’ And then a light bulb went off over their scummy little heads.”

Don Imus
Imus in the Morning
WFAN-AM
Kaufman Astoria Studios
Astoria, NY 11106 December 20, 2004

Dear Mr. Imus:

We were troubled by your remark on the December 15 edition of Imus in the Morning and Imus On MSNBC, where you referred to the publishers of a new book called "The Christmas Thief" as "thieving Jews," and your subsequent "apology" on the same program, where you said (of thieving Jews), "I apologize … I realize that's redundant."

While we understand that your show is meant to be caustic, edgy and irreverent, we were deeply troubled by your words. As you know, the thieving Jew is an age-old anti-Semitic canard that still, unfortunately, has great currency today.

We realize that your show often uses humor to debunk stereotypes by poking fun at them, and we do have a sense of humor. Yet we have fielded dozens of e-mails, letters and calls since the program aired, with many listeners – both Jewish and non-Jewish – expressing anger and outrage, and we do not think their reaction was unjustified. We hope that you will, in future, be more careful to avoid generalizations that may reinforce negative perceptions of Jews.

http://www.cair-net.org/default.asp?Page=articleView&id=1331&theType=NR

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also
urged that the program's host, Don Imus, be reprimanded for failing to
challenge his colleagues’ inflammatory remarks. CAIR, which says it
received numerous complaints about the comments, quoted a transcript of
Imus’ November 12th program in which he and his on-air colleagues engaged
in the following discussion about live coverage of Palestinian President
Yasser Arafat's funeral:

DON IMUS: They're (the Palestinians) eating dirt and that fat pig wife of
his is living in Paris.
COLLEAGUE: They’re all brainwashed, though. That’s what it is. And they're
stupid, to begin with, but they’re brainwashed now. Stinking animals. They
ought to drop the bomb right there, kill ‘em all right now…
IMUS: Well, the problem is we have (reporter) Andrea (Mitchell) there; we
don't want anything to happen to her.
COLLEAGUE: Oh, she's got to get out. Andrea, get out and then drop the bomb
and kill everybody…
COLLEAGUE: Look at this. Animals. Animals!

It's sexist just as much as it's racist and completely disgusting in both regards. I won't go so far as to say Imus should be fired but I do think that any company that airs commercials during his filth should think long and hard about the people they are alienating by doing so. I don't want him to be martyr in the name of free speech (which is bullshit but they're arguing it) so I think boycotting his sponsors is the best way to go. We need to boycott anyone who sponsors his hatred and let them know that it's unacceptable.

"Allison Gollust, a spokeswoman for MSNBC, said the network considers Imus’ comments “deplorable” and is reviewing the matter."

Points i think we should make:

Imus words are his job. He can say whatever he wants about his intentions, and even if we were to believe him, the fact remains is that he is spreading hate. Time and Time again.

Sometimes people say hurtful things and don't realize how hurtful they are. I have said nasty things to and about my father, does that mean I hate him? No. I have said nasty things to my husband, does that make me an abuser? No.
My point is this, this going way over the top when Honorable apologies, regrets and compromise should prevail. I have to wonder what is really behind all of this anger.

221. Unspeakably awful.
Quotes like the above make me hope that reincarnation is a reality. If it is, I know how God will send these people back! They need to understand the pain that they cause.

223. Thank you for drawing my attention to this very disturbing matter
I just sent the following e-mail to the Imus producers. E-mail is Imus@msnbc.com if anyone else is interested.

Subject line: Enough is enough. Imus has got to go!

To Imus in the Morning producers:

I am joining thousands of like-minded people in boycotting NBC until Don Imus is fired. In this day and age there is no call for his brand of "humor," which I consider to be highly inflammatory and insulting.

I recently learned that Mr Imus' reference to members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed 'hos" is not an isolated incident. According to a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, "Imus has an extensive history of making or allowing blatantly racist commentary and 'jokes' on his morning radio show.

Like calling Venus and Serena Williams 'animals.'
Or calling national journalist Gwen Ifill 'the cleaning lady.'
Or calling national journalist Bob Herbert a 'quota hire.'
Or likening the appearance of certain black NBA players to 'apes.'
Or referring to residents of Harlem as 'moolingans.'
Or referring to the black wife of former Secretary of Defense William Cohen as a 'big-haired ho.'

Not to mention that he was basically forced to admit in a 1998 "60 Minutes" interview that he had hired a producer specifically to do 'nigger jokes.'"

I am outraged that this type of racist "humor" is sanctioned by NBC and allowed a voice on public airwaves.

A two-week suspension does not go nearly far enough. It is time to pull the plug on Imus in the Morning. Otherwise, NBC will continue to watch its ratings sag as fewer and fewer American consumers choose to tune in.

Thank you for your consideration.

229. Clarence Page just said as much on The News Hour.
Tom Oliphant was on with Clarence Page about this. Oliphant didn't feel he should be fired; Page said that Imus wasn't a baby and he's done this many, many times. Time for a consequence to occur, else he'll just think all he'll need to do is apologize, only to do it again and again.

Imus can kiss my nappy-headed, sisterlocked, college-educated ass. :-)
