Quintessential Americanism: the math is too complicated, so ditch the feature...
Where "the math" refers to: (recs) - (unrecs) < 5
Thank goodness we're now able to keep this spam off the Greatest. And thank goodness that the spammers haven't been silenced, and we all get to talk about it nevertheless, if we choose.
And next for all pages....perhaps a vote on whether a topic has been covered too much and should be eliminated altogether. How about if a topic gets 10 unrecommended it is deleated....would that satisfy you?
There's a big difference between a post that gets *NO ACTION AT ALL* and a post that provoked 300 recommends and 300 disrecommends. The first post obviously excited no passion at all while the second post was seen a little differently.
Both sides of the equation should be shown.
Another useful piece of data would be if the recommend/disrecommend history of each poster were public knowledge...
25. Why the "unrecommend" feature is undemocratic and constitutes censorship.
The number of posters who recommend a post vis a vis the number of posters who are trying to censor (remove) from the "greatest page" or at least put it farther down the page by reducing the number of recommends is a big secret!
DU'ers who recommend a post for "the greatest" are not trying to exclude, censor or remove a post from anywhere on DU.
Those who un-recommend are censoring by removing a post from "the greatest" page and at least move it farther down "the greatest page" in order to reduce the number of views.
