As so many people in http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6026876">this thread remind us. The "conscience clause" is either available for all Americans, or for no Americans.

2. And lots of pharmacists went through school before RU-486 was invented
And with all due respect, the same thing did not happen in Vietnam. The kids in Vietnam (for the most part) were draftees, not volunteers.

5. Well...
I would guess that most people who enlist in the military don't do so because they want to kill people, but surely they understand that they might have to kill people. However, if you're going to support a soldier's right to refuse to do his job on moral grounds then it would be inconsistent to not afford the same right to others who object to taking a life.

14. RU486 is given in a clinic; emergency contraception is dispensed at a pharmacy
EC is nothing more than a large dose of birth control pills. Trying to conflate RU486 with EC or even military service makes you look silly and uninformed.

7. I agree
Most troops wish we were never there in the first place. I have no problem with that statement. Praising deserters is a whole other story. From what I experienced, the Iraqi people were happy that we liberated them from Sadam, we just out lived our welcome.

8. but you see
we went into Iraq under the pretense that Saddam had WMDs..there was no other reason given. and that was a lie. it was never about freeing people from Saddam. ever.
a lot of soldiers realized Bush lied, and they are rebelling. many of their friends died, for nothing. for Oil. thats all. to keep a lot of oil companies in business.
and a lot of soldiers are really pissed off about that.

9. No big secret
When is a war not about a countries financial interest? To be fair, and I don't want to bring up old arguments, but everyone (including B. Clinton) believed Saddam had WMD's. The only people who knows why we really went to war in Iraq are Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. It could have been WMD's, terrorism, revenge, oil, or because Iraq was the easiest of the access of evil. Probably all of the above, but who knows.

Trust me, if this war was really "illegal" and we were committing war crimes, you would see whole battalions refusing to fight. American soldiers are not pawns, idiots, or psychopaths. They are just professionals doing a job and reacting to people who are shooting at them. I have loss a friend, and have another friend who is a triple amputee. I understand the cost of this war.

10. Im just some old grandmother and I knew he didnt have WMDs
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 08:54 PM by Mari333
and I knew it was bullshit from the beginning because I did my homework. all of DU knew it.
it was illegal, and eventually a lot of soldiers realized that, or are realizing that. it was never ever about anything but Oil, and securing the Oil fields for corporations. I consider what Bush and Cheney did to be a war crime, and what they did was to insult every military man and woman who they sent over there by making them a part of it.
We attacked a sovereign country that didnt attack us. Iraq never did anything to us. nothing.
Bush and Cheney and their whole cabal should be behind bars.
Not ONE soldier or civilian should have died or been harmed in Iraq.
Not one.

13. There is a huge difference between believed and had proof of WMD
During the run-up to the invasion, I kept asking anyone who would listen, "But what if he doesn't?" If Saddam did not have WMDs, we would be invading a country that posed absolutely no threat to us, that had taken no action against us. We would be the agressors, the nation starting a war with no cause. We would be the war criminals. Guess what? He didn't, we did, we are. Thanks a pantload, GOP.
