Changed their voicemail/answering machine message to a pathetic little blurb.

I don't think they've gotten the message yet, they're still in business under the same ownership.

18. Most of this type of community pools are private clubs, owned by the community.
Usually the developer sets it up and the community takes it over after the last house is finished, like a condo. Others are similarly structured, except that the civic association bought the land and built the pool instead of a developer doing it.

11. There were black members in past - didn't see any this year
Amy Goldman said she has been a member of The Valley Club, located on Tomlinson Road in Lower Moreland Township, for two years. She said the pool wasn't particularly crowded and the children from Creative Steps Day Care were "well behaved and respectful."

She said there had been black members at the club in the past, though she couldn't remember seeing any this year.

http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/local_news/070909_Valley_Swim_Club_controversy

Apparently, the way Duesler handled it was to refund Wright's check and tell her that the club membership overthrew his decision "by voting to disinvite us," Wright said.

Well, that's news to Valley Club member Jim Flynn. Standing in front of the club - which was padlocked yesterday - Flynn seethed over the way he said Duesler has handled things.

"To my knowledge, the members were not involved in any of the decisionmaking," says Flynn, 41, a Fox Chase resident who pays a $700 membership for a family of four. "As far as I know, all we recommended was to change the time that came, from the afternoons to a nonpeak time. We never recommended to disinvite them."

As for Duesler's "complexion" comment, he said, "I couldn't believe he said that. . . . It was insensitive and inflammatory. Look, I'm not naive enough to think that racism doesn't exist here, but I don't want the good people's names at this club to be smeared."

13. Wait until Flynn finds out the membership is only $395/yr and he's paying $700
The first article out said that the membership was $395. I noted it, because I divided it into the $1900 the daycare spent to see if the daycare had bought enough memberships to approximate family memberships.

It was the manager, the board who decided to refund the day care's money and the members who jumped out of the pool when the day care kids got in.

The manager and the Melanoma Queen. I call her that because every community pool has one. She's the woman who is always there, soaked in Lazlo, looks like a chuck roast, and thinks she owns the place.

John Duesler is the president, he made the "complexion" remark after the fact. He also made the statement below.

This story is taking on a life of its own. I just read one piece promoting "outrage" (organized demonstration I think) that said that the lifeguards told the children that the pool didn't allow minorities. Now, do you honestly believe that? Get real. No suburban teenager looked at a little black kid and said, "we don't allow minorities". Neither do I believe that the Melanoma Queen said, "they are going to do something to my children."

But the larger point here is that this is a community owned pool and 99.9% of the membership had nothing to do with the events that took place on that Monday.

The Valley Club is deeply troubled by the recent allegations of racism which are completely untrue.
We had originally agreed to invite the camps to use our facility, knowing full well that the children from the camps were from multi-ethnic backgrounds. Unfortunately, we quickly learned that we underestimated the capacity of our facilities and realized that we could not accommodate the number of children from these camps. All funds were returned to the camps and we will re-evaluate the issue at a later date to determine whether it can be feasible in the future.

Our Valley Club deplores discrimination in any form, as is evidenced by our multi-ethnic and diverse membership. Whatever comments may or may not have been made by an individual member is an opinion not shared by The Valley Club Board.

24. You are forgetting the folks who jumped out of the pool
and the ugly comments they made to the kids from the day care center.

Yes, I believe these kids. I have taught elementary school for 30 years and kids don't make up stuff like this.

To blame this on one or even two people is wrong.

28. How much proof do you need?
Do you never encounter racism? I guess since I have taught in largely minority schools for 30 years and have seen so much racism, I don't doubt this story at all. It happens. And more than we white folks realize I guess.

29. Just the facts would be nice.
Otherwise, neither you nor I really know what we are talking about.

Do you never encounter racism?

Of the blatant variety this is being portrayed as being, extremely rare. If you are talking about walking into an all black gathering (like a bar) and being made to feel like a whore in church, not in a long time. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen if I went up to the Knights Bar (a black car-club bar) tonight , but I don't know that it would. I know that if I drive down a certain street in a black neighborhood I am at risk of having rocks thrown at my car. I can honestly say that I am not aware of a comparable white on black situation in this area. I also am not aware of white kids in a Pinellas County school telling a black teacher, "What are you doing here? This is a white school!" as recently happened in the reverse.

I guess since I have taught in largely minority schools for 30 years and have seen so much racism, I don't doubt this story at all. It happens. And more than we white folks realize I guess.

If you have taught in a largely minority school for 30 years, and if the majority of the racism you have witnessed has been directed at the black students, then your experience is completely different from mine. My experience is that when black students are in the majority, white students take more abuse than I have ever witnessed in the reverse. In fact, I have never seen a black kid attacked for being black, and I have been the white kid who was attacked for being white. Granted, neither your experience or mine is universal, as we can't be in all places at all times.

BTW, the only reason I am being a pain about this pool thing is because (a) it's a pile-on and (b) because it doesn't make sense.

32. You are being dishonest.
This does not make sense. The homes in the area this pool serves cost $300K to millions. These are not ignorant people who fell off the back of a turnip truck on their way to a Klan meeting. They are suburban Philadelphians of some substance. I am not saying that there is no racism, or even that the ultimate decision to end the program was racist. I am saying that the event - as described - doesn't make sense.

I can see the Melanoma Queen leaping from her lounge chair and going into the office and demanding, "What the hell is going on here?" to pool staff. I cannot see her making stupid remarks to children, or a crowd of sixty black people. I can see her, upon being told that it was a planned event (that she had no say in) then going back to the pool and telling her kids they have to leave, NOW, and not being bashful about it. But the events as described, do not make sense. Which is why I question them.

35. The management experienced an amazing internal clusterfuck
and the membership made the worst of it. The entire sillines could have been avoided HAD THE MANAGEMENT INFORMED ITS MEMBERS OF THE SUMMER RENTALS. But NOOOO... ALSO, having been a counselor in various summer camps, we ALWAYS organized the camper to adult ratio and checked out the capacity of the facilities. Look at the aerial shot of the pool again.

If you cannot see the Melanoma Queen making stupid remarks to children, then you simply have never experienced being on the receiving end of her spew.
