Every so often, DU erupts into a shitstorm over some percieved slight concerning one group or another. This latest storm, re: unrecommend, was started by a group of people who rightly or wrongly think that it's stifling in some way. I would posit that there is a large group of DU'ers who like to twist noses and I'll admit to being one of that group on occasion. There is no reason for alarm though. The aforementioned group will soon move onto other things to twist noses over. The group who concerns themselves with how many recs their posts get will soon find that things have returned to normal, or at least what is normal for them. Their posts will soon begin to rise to the top of the Greatest Page just as they did before. The DU attention span isn't altogether different from that of non-DU reading Americans.
It's not going to stifle anything, and if one looks closely, it's already working itself out. Look at the forum listing and you'll find less and less <0 threads. This is happening after only one day. In three days, the only threads with <0 ratings will be those which absolutely deserve them. And we, as a group, will have already moved on to what is the outrage/poutrage du jour.
To those whose highest aspiration is to have each and every one of their threads appear on the Greatest Page, I speak these words: This too shall pass, and you shall regain your status as one who must be read.
