Alec Baldwin's rip on Jack Cafferty makes the phone call to his daughter sound like a Hallmark card
Alec Baldwin

Man of the People

I was sorry to watch, live on CNN, Edward R. Murrow and Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and all around "Man of the People" Jack Cafferty spit on me on his broadcast today.

After decrying the notion of "actors and comedians" running for public office, Cafferty stated, "Baldwin's credentials are questionable... but Franken is no slouch. He's Harvard educated."

So Franken fits the mold for Cafferty because he went to Harvard? What other schools does Cafferty approve of as breeding grounds for office holders in America? What other professions does Cafferty believe should be excluded from holding office?

The material I received from a contingent in Ohio was back in 1996, but Playboy omitted that fact in editing the piece. As for running for office in the future, who knows? I always felt that doing so was a way to serve one's country. But, now that I think about what Cafferty has on his mind, maybe it's a lousy idea. Heck, I only have a BFA in drama from NYU. Perhaps New York University should print on its undergraduate drama degrees "Warning: the bestowing of this degree precludes you from seeking any public office per Jack Cafferty of CNN."

I would like to make a deal with Cafferty. Jack, you don't tell people that a career in the performing arts disqualifies them from seeking elected office, and I won't say publicly that your being convicted of leaving the scene of an accident in which you struck a cyclist and then ran two red lights while you were pursued by the police and were subsequently ordered to serve 70 hours of community service back in May of 2003 disqualifies you from posing as a "Man of the People" on a major cable news network.

Fair enough?

3. Cafferty should remember that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
I normally like Cafferty, he was one of the very few on CNN during the Bush Gestapo years that actually criticized Bush!

But today's lot of news readers--who checked their ethics and integrity at the studio door--should remember that very little they do in public isn't documented somewhere.

8. Baldwin is an ass.
he's got anger management issues ... until he reigns that in, he is unqualified for public office.

BTW, i disagree with Cafferty on that Harvard remark.

23. Agreed that Baldwin is an ass.
He should quit the teasing bullshit and throw his hat in the ring for public office. Let the people judge his worthiness for office. I think he would be unpleasantly surprised. Then we would see a real temper tantrum.

Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 06:17 PM by shireen
But i was really turned-off by that voicemail he left his daughter. Before that, i had heard, from other articles, about his temper. He'd probably make a good politician and strong advocate for liberal values. But first, he needs to tame that anger and vindictiveness.

40. His "point" was an ad hominem attack.
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 10:45 AM by noamnety
The accusation against him was that he didn't have the qualifications for public office. An appropriate response would have been to refute that by listing his credentials. If acting school isn't a valid credential, accept that - but he should have listed the community organizing he's done or whatever it is that makes him qualified.

Instead, he opted not to list anything of his qualifications at all, and instead attack Cafferty for a character issue in the recent past - making the case that if you have a major character flaw, you lose all credibility.

Maybe that's true, maybe it isn't. But given that Alec's been proven (in the MORE recent past) to be an emotionally abusive bully who caused a judge to step in and ban him from any contact with his own child ... he'd be smarter not to go there.

Here's his phone call to his 11 year old daughter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J0-ZatDHug

Further, I don't recall any conditions on who is worthy to serve the people enshrined in the Constitution.

Cafferty makes some interesting observations, but he's M$M all the way.

17. While I don't entirely agree or disagree with what Cafferty said, Baldwin sounds like Palin in
this little diatribe.

Geesh, people. If you want to be in the public spotlight, politics or otherwise, you are going to get judged, analyzed, etc.

Grow a thicker skin.

Would Baldwin be lashing out like this every time one of this constituents wrote a LTTE?

22. Cafferty didn't just insult Baldwin
He wrote off huge chucks of the population as being unworthy to hold office, based on a very elitist -- note the CORRECT use of the term -- world view.

That's worth getting mad about.

Unlike Fertilla the Huntress, Baldwin actually uses full sentences and details instead of rambling, nebulous canned phrases.

35. I made Alec sound like a priest when I phoned home from New York
one night after taking daughter to see "Annie." My two sons held an "Open House" which involved beer and other adult beverages, and to be smart asses they invited the "party neighbors" for supervision. Oh my. It was a righteous rant and much unfit language on my part. Parents can get really ticked and sometimes it's just necessary. These "boys" are now in their late 40s and way strict with such goings on in todays teenagers. Go figure.

36. Here's the difference: Cafferty isn't an 11-year-old girl
If Baldwin really wants to open up this can of worms, that tape's going to get played again.

I don't care how sorry he was after it happened. Words mean things. His child's going to remember that tirade the rest of her life. Baldwin was the adult; it was up to him to control himself and calm down before speaking to a child in that manner. He was unable to do so.

In the meantime, the law dealt with Cafferty. It's unfortunate that Mr. Baldwin doesn't seem to have had any ill effects from his escapade.

IMHO, YMMV.
