Doctor walks 700 miles for health care reform (PLEASE KEEP THIS KICKED)
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 05:45 PM by wndycty
As many of you know, my friend, Dr. Ogan Gurel, left Chicago on foot on Saturday, June 27 to walk to Washington DC for health care, today he is in Mansfield, OH and I thought I would share this article with you.

Doctor walks 700 miles for health care reform
In an effort to expose the failures of the current health care system, Dr. Ogan Gurel, 45, is trekking nearly 700 miles on foot from Chicago to Washington D.C. in order to bring to the attention of lawmakers the real hardships and suffering of people he meets on the way, when it comes to the lack of health care.

Gurel is appalled at how certain special interests and corporations have been dominating the debate, spending millions on lobbying, and working to maintain their own “piece of the pie” with little consideration for the people – those truly affected broadly by healthcare. Gurel says he’s fed up with recent statements made by insurance company executives, pharmaceutical interests, as well as the American Medical Association, the American Hospital association, and other groups who are trying to manipulate and distort the heated health care debate now taking place in Congress.

The World spoke with Dr. Gurel on the phone July 8 as he was walking along the Lincoln Highway just East of Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

“Nearly 50 million Americans lack health care insurance and many more are grossly underinsured,” said Gurel. “Every American deserves health care and as a matter of public health, economic security, and simple human dignity, health care is a common good,” he added. “As a nation, health care for all makes us greater and as individuals it allows us to reach our full potential.”

3. The cynical part of me is wondering why he doesn't spend the time providing free health care and
publicize that he's doing it to "bring to the attention of lawmakers the real hardships and suffering of people he meets on the way, when it comes to the lack of health care".

29. Maybe the cynical part of you should give it a rest.
He's traveling to meet people, hear their stories, and bring them to Washington.
Plus he's using a route to make a connection between federally funded roadways and what should be federally funded healthcare.

5. Being under 30, I would of walked with them, but...
I can't walk more than an hour without being in intense and excruciating pain from rationing health care I needed (due to unaffordability).

Its been 4 years out in this state, and I'm finally having a single-payer system (not in the US) treat me for it. :(

There is real human suffering in this system of employer based private insurance (and little to none for the self-employed). Anyone who would want to keep it, even with bandaids, is insane.

8. Sounds like a great guy
He's not in the office billing as much as he can for two minute exams in assemblyline fashion. It shows that there are good doctors out there who are not just concerned with profit, unlike some of the frauds I've seen up close in action in the personal injury field and workers' comp system.

34. I hope others in the health profession would join him
we need more folks in the health profession stepping up and speaking out loudly for healthcare reform. because one man's voice is going to be easily drowned out by the shrill, screaming cacophony of insurance and pharmaceutical industry lobbyists in Washington.
