Either way - a thanks to Skinner/et al
You either don't care, love, or hate the new feature.

That said thanks to the folks that run DU for trying new things to see what fits.

They are responding to the community that calls DU home, and if it works great, if it doesn't they will most likely change it like they have in the past.

Give it a chance and see what happens. Not a huge fan of it (lord knows how many sleeper trolls will use it) but it could end up being the next best thing since sliced bread (try making a sandwich with a whole loaf sometime...)

The biggest plus to the old system was it focused on the positive, if you didn't like it you didn't recommend it. On the other hand it also added to a few people being able to have their posts kicked up no matter what they posted, so it lacked fairness.

I'd like to think I can trust many people here to be fair and honest in their appraisal of posts, and that the few oddballs will be drowned out (hey, who just yelled out that I was an oddball??)

The admins are willing to try something new, and I think we should be glad for that and give it a try and see if it works here. If it doesn't then I will light your torches on the way to the protest :)

10. I don't like the unrec.
But, if it gets abused, they'll can it.

I appreciate that the admins are willing to try these new things.

4. Yes, thank you!
I know how difficult it is to manage this giant herd of cats at any time, but adding something as sophisticated as this must have taken some doing. I appreciate your efforts!

5. Yeah, an "unrecommend" button but still no "Preparedness" forum.
Despite numerous tries (complete with mission statement and required votes).

8. If the wrong things are making it to the greatest page, they have every right to control that.

9. "Wrong things"? What might those be?
To make it onto the "Greatest" page, an OP had to receive 5 "recommends" from other DUers. That was the function of the "Greatest" page...to highlight OPs that DUers thought should be on the "Greatest" page.

How could any OP on the "greatest" page be "wrong"?

I realize that it's a "right" of the admins to do whatever they please, but is that their goal...and, if it is, is is a goal with which you agree?

19. A call for an "unrecommend" feature and not much thought into the implementation.
I've seen recent calls for the feature.

I think the admins tried to accommodate the members, but didn't put much thought into it.

15. A forum for the discussion of emergency preparedness.
Snowstorm, hurricane, electrical service interruption, pandemic, up to global economic collapse...

A forum to discuss ways that we can prepare for various situations.

7. OT: Why is "sliced bread" considered such a world-changing invention?

I can think of thousands of inventions and innovations that are more worthy.

"The greatest thing since the wheel" would be better

"The greatest thing since the Magna Carta" would be appropriate

But "sliced bread"?

Come on...

28. Hang on just a second there, fella.
White Castle hamburgers are served in all their awe-inspiring greasiness on a bun. (Used to make regular midnight dashes to the White Castle in Jersey City, and I'm sure I've got the arterial plaque to prove it.)

24. It's a generational thing, young man. Back in my day...
...we didn't have sliced bread. It had never occurred to anyone to slice it. We hollowed out an entire loaf and then stuffed it with tuna fish, or peanut butter and jelly, or ham & cheese & roast beef.

Come to think of it, those made for some damn fine meals. You're right, sliced bread sucks.

it is the best moderated message board I know of, and has the best interface. Compared to other boards, the flame wars are not even that bad.

21. It will accomplish exactly what it's designed to do.
It will keep controversial threads off the Greatest Page.

That, I think, is a terrible idea.

But, that's just my opinion.

22. Well I am not sure that I care but
I know that in say the religious forum only threads critical of religion and faith will make it to the greatest because the atheist way outnumber the believers....so that side will dominate the forum even more than they do now.
