Poll: Majority Of Voters Say Sarah Palin Is Not Fit To Be President
By Eric Kleefeld - July 9, 2009, 11:31AM

A new national survey from Public Policy Polling (D) finds that the American public has a pretty solid verdict on Sarah Palin: A full majority, 55% of voters, say she is not fit to be president, compared to just 37% who say she is fit for it.

In addition, respondents were asked whether Palin's announcement that she will resign as Governor of Alaska makes them more or less likely to support her for president. Only 30% say more likely, with 57% saying less likely, and 14% not sure.

Oddly enough, though, her personal favorable ratings might have gone up slightly, to 46% favorable and 45% unfavorable, compared to a 43%-49% rating last month.

From the pollster's analysis: "It's not surprising Palin's overall favorability numbers haven't declined since most folks inclined to dislike her already did before she announced she was resigning as Governor," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "But even among people with a positive opinion of her this move seems to have raised some questions about her
judgment such that a majority of Americans don't think she's fit to be President."

4. As Mike Murphy (political consultant) wrote in a recent article

There are people in the base of either party who would vote for a bag of cement if it had the right letter "R" or "D" on it.

Given that Bush maintained around 37% popularity till the end and given that the base probably views Palin as a female Bush "folksy, down-home, plain spoken" it's not that surprising.

7. I suspect that is a combination of the
expected right wing nutjobs and others who believe the president's job should be to do very little and stay out of the way of the free market. Just a guess.

2. I could not even begin to imagine a Palin Presidency
It would be a non-stop laugh fest and an unending series of national embarrassments. Even the Chimp would probably look great by contrast.

3. I swear the GOP is going to spend the next 3 years making her electable
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 02:10 PM by LynneSin
The GOP just needs a name they can run for President annd they'll have some Dick Cheney-like person doing the work behind the scenes. George was lucky, I was told but several from Texas that the Governor job is more ceremonial and the Lt. Gov does all the work PLUS at least TX is in the main 48 states. Living in Alaska with a job where she does actually have to work has an impact on promoting the Palin Package.

For the next 3 years you'll see Sarah plotting a course out where she'll speak to controlled crowds who are guarenteed to be rabid Palin supporters. And then Fox will broadcast those appearances nightly to show just how 'beloved' Ms. Palin is with the public with nary a mention that the tickets were only handed out to loyal Palin supporters. Now she's free to travel the country without worrying about her sagging popularity and nagging critics back in Alaska.

For the GOP it doesn't matter how dumb Sarah Palin is - just if she can get the votes to win.

8. I don't think she'll do it. She's the Iquiterod....
I don't think Palin can walk her talk. She's not nearly as tough as she'd like people to think.

Palin was, after all, a Governor who surrounded herself with friends in jobs they were not qualified for, and who fired others when they crossed her. That indicates insecurity, not toughness.

I think Palin has been stung by just how much is expected of someone in big time politics, and by the fact that she can't distract them with her inch-deep attempts to look competent.

10. She surrounded herself with friends but she had a job which naturally has critics too
The critics were simply removed. Remember this gal can babble like an idiot and look like a hero provided they keep her surrounded by her fans. That was done with George Bush for 8 years where they made sure everyone who attended a function where Bush was speaking was a known supporter of Bush and the GOP

11. True, but Palin herself.....
is a loose cannon (if you can believe the recent Vanity Fair article), and hard to control. If she can keep her vanity and thin-skinned nature under control and allow herself to be handled, then she could be packaged as Bush was.

I guessing Palin's not controllable enough. Bush seemed to know he was a disaster on his own. He spent 8 years pretty much hiding behind others.

Maybe if Sarah started hitting the bottle as hard as George, she would be easier to handle.

9. Are they only asking people who admit to being Republicans?
Because that number is like 20% of the population at this point.

71% of Americans who still clearly define themselves as Republicans is.....not much.
