One Thing About Unrec - We DUers Need To Make An Informal Understanding Of What It Means...
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 01:42 PM by BlooInBloo
In particular, there's a possible ambiguity between:

(a) unrec = "I don't like the thread"

or

(b) unrec = "This is a good thread about a shitty/sad/anger-inducing topic" (so you're unrec-ing the fact, not the messenger, as it were)

A possible case in point: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6021868
(the fuckers doing the bumfights thing thread)

This thread has at least one unrec. I suspect (hope) that that unrec is due to the voter disliking the fuckers setting up the fights, as opposed to the existence of a thread informing us of the shitty facts.

So I recommend (rimshot) that an informal understanding be reached by DUers about how the unrec is supposed to work: are we unrec'ing the THREAD or are we unrec'ing WHAT THE THREAD IS TALKING ABOUT?

1. Essentially it means that the voter doesn't want to see it on the greatest page.
For whatever reason.

8. So trying to establish motive is a waste of time.
People have lots of reasons for not wanting to see something on the greatest page.

Which kind of guarantees that only the most bland and inoffensive posts will be on the front page.

K&R if you like puppies!

3. Something tells me this feature wont last long
Opposing side are already forming. Next comes the ol' 'let it drop' mentality with all of its drama and abuse.

It will, however, be fun to watch it all unfold (will stock up on jollytime)

4. Cliquers vs. un-cliquers
clickers vs. unclickers

Let the wars begin.

6. You couldn't get everyone to agree on the purpose anyway.
I say just let it evolve and see how it goes.

7. Maybe they should just drop the recommend and unrecommend options altogether?
It seems people don't mind if there thread is recommended (certainly can understand that), but if it's unrecommended then that hurts. So get rid of both options.
