Ex-mistress' Husband Says Ensign Paid Severance

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The husband of Sen. John Ensign's former mistress told a newspaper that the Nevada Republican paid the woman more than $25,000 in severance when she stopped working for the senator.

Doug Hampton also provided a letter to The Las Vegas Sun that he claimed was a handwritten apology from Ensign to Cindy Hampton, a former treasurer for his campaign committees. "I used you for my own pleasure," the letter reads, later adding. "Plain and simple it was a sin."

In the Feb. 2008 letter posted on the newspaper's Web site, someone signing their name "John" says he takes "100 percent responsibility for my actions." "God never intended us to do this. I walked away from Him and my relationship with Him has suffered terribly," the letter reads.

Neither Ensign's spokesman nor his attorney returned a call seeking comment.

1. I have to wonder...

If one would "walk away from God" for a few minutes of sexual pleasure, what would bring one back if there were more at stake?

At what point is the "payoff" worth more than the contrition?

Ensign is the typical hypocrite, doing what he called others out on, and then finding "solace" in the thought that all is well because he talked to God about it. I had a rabbi friend years ago that made a statement that struck me during the "Evangelist Capers"....he based this on the blatant hypocrisy, nothing else: "God may have forgiven them, but I think they are shit".
