1. Dennis has been my candidate since 2003...
He may never make it to higher office, but he shares my views and he's got to be the hardest working guy in Congress, never gives up on what's really important... :patriot:

3. I see Bernie as far harder working than Dennis
and as someone who accomplishes more. He doesn't seek the limelight like Dennis does, and he's a lot rougher around the edges, but he's also better at crafting laws that really help the working class and the poor.

8. uh, so what specifically has DK done as far as getting legislation passed or even
coming up with viable alternatives? He's a good voice to have, but he's not so great when it comes to being effective.

19. In the years 1995-2006, it was impossible to get any progressive legislation passed.
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 09:54 AM by Ken Burch
There was no such thing as a legislatively effective progressive in those years, and there can't be any such person at any time when the Republicans control Congress.

And in most legislative bodies, the "effective" ones usually don't have any core principles. All the "effective" ones care about is "getting SOMETHING passed", whether not what's passed is worth anything.

I don't think Bernie got anything passed in those years, either. Nothing against him, but that wasn't a valid measure of progressives for most of Dennis and Bernie's careers. You can't be effective in a minority.

If my tone is harsh here, it's because we're talking about a "fantasy" scenario. In such a scenario, nobody should get bashed. And Dennis got so much bashing in other DU forums he shouldn't get any here. You don't need to attack Dennis to make the case for Bernie.

20. Thank you. I couldn't have stated it better...
Whether he was "effective" or not when confronted with the vote to go to war, the carnage in the Middle East or the mess that we were headed for, economically, he was always a voice for us, of sanity. He's too outspoken on the controversial issues to be "electable" as POTUS, but he'll always have my admiration for his courage to speak out, and keep these issues in front of the voters so the "frontrunners" had no choice but to address them. He'll always have my admiration and support. :patriot:

2. If I "could" choose, I'd choose neither. If I "had to" choose, I'd pick Bernie.

5. Tough Call. I admire both of them.
And some of us would also like "Barbara Lee" as an option in that poll.

9. I hereby nominate Bernie Sanders...
...as Unquestioned King of the World. I'm hard put to think of anything on which he and I disagree.

10. If you're a strong proponent of gun control, you probably disagree with him
One of the major reasons that Bernie was first elected to Congress was that he took an anti gun control position and the repug incumbent was a strong pro-gun control guy.

16. Love Dennis, but I see Bernie as more effective ....
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 08:33 AM by hlthe2b
He is also far better at dismissing the RW idiots. Though their views are similar on many issues, I think it is Bernie's willingess to call himself (unabashedly) a Socialist that gives him a bit of teflon. Granted, Dennis would be unlikely to be elected as a self-professed "socialist" in his District, as opposed to Vermont, but nonetheless. Bernie comes across as a staunch and unrepentant defender of his views. Dennis can be passionate, but to me at least, not quite as forceful. Of course some of this may be the simple result of Bernie being one/100 in the Senate and Dennis being merely one/435 in the House.

That said, I love them both.

18. Both would be fantastic choices
Dennis gets my sentimental vote, although I think Bernie would do a better job overall.
