Google updates New Orleans satellite imagery.
Google has now updated their satellite imagery with post-Katrina images. I didn't see this mentioned here. I thought I'd mention it, seeing as a lot of people were convinced that this was an Evil Plot (TM).

3. Here's what appears to have happened.
Some time around last September, Google bought a set of high-res image data for a lot of urban areas in the US. This was to replace their previous data, which was not as good. However, the new data was slightly older than the Katrina dataset they'd been using. Hence, no Katrina damage. This *appears* to have gone without any sort of complaint from last September until now. Before the article came out, I could only find one thread on it in the entirety of the Google Earth Community BBS.

To Google's credit, as soon as people started bitching they replaced the images with newer ones.

4. They finally updated the Mississippi coast too
Although, it's still an old update because the casino barges are still inland where they landed after the storm. They hadn't been demolished when these images were taken of the coastline.

Here's where I rode out Katrina. The water came up pretty close. Probably within a block.

This is where I live now. I will have to run away this season. During Katrina the water came up to the tree in my front yard. I have some friends who rode out Katrina here in their mobile home two lots up from mine. They survived, but a tree smashed their bedroom in the early hours of the storm.

I have a great view of the Bay, though.

5. Is it too dark on anyone's else's view?
My view is too dark to tell much. I don't think it's my computer because none of the other sites I've visited this morning are that dark - and I can see the pictures posted of Back Bay above without any trouble.
