1. The Legend of the Rainbow Warriors
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 04:27 PM by SpiralHawk
Namesake of Greenpeace's flagship, the Rainbow Warrior

"In brief, the legend of the rainbow warriors says that when the Earth becomes desperately sick some of the people will recognize that they are destroying themselves and their Earth Mother. With spiritual insight and support, the rainbow warriors — people of all colors and faiths — will come to the rescue using only peaceful means, eventually establishing a long and joyous reign of peace.

"The rainbow story is told many ways and in many different places around the world, including on Turtle Island (North America). It has been glimpsed in vision and told for hundreds of years, from dozens of perspectives..."

8. The Hawai'ians saw the world as a turtle shell.
Their word for world is 'honua'. The word for turtle is 'honu'

2. Hey, their action should be consonant with the traditions of Mt. Rushmore.
Cut that slogan into the living rock!

4. 12 were arrested and appeared in Federal court this
afternoon. No word, yet, on the charges. Possibly felony trespassing.

5. Hmmm
I got a feeling that bit pissed off more people than it convinced or converted. A lot more.

Seems rather counter productive to me.

6. "That does it. I'm so pissed off by Greenpeace that I'm going to ignore global warming!"
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 06:46 PM by RufusTFirefly
Anyone who reacts that way should be set out on an ice floe.

If your house is on fire and I barge into your den, grab you by the collar, and shout in your face "You idiot! Your fuckin' house is burning down! Get the hell out!!" your correct response should not be, "You know what? I don't like your tone! Just for that, I'm staying put!!"

7. Fraid I have to agree
I totally appreciate the senitment, but to choose a national landmark probably wasn't cool. They should have chosen some specific corporate entity or government building. What they did was like defacing (temporarily) the American people's property. Not cool with me. And normally I love these actions.

9. You wouldn't be talking about it if they had.
In fact you would ignore it completely.

10. Bingo! The goal is press and publicity of any kind.
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 07:05 PM by RufusTFirefly
The Right understands this better than the Left does. The Right makes preposterous claims and then the MSM falls all over itself to host a discussion on "both sides" of their preposterous claim. When the Left does something provocative, the MSM simply ignores the issue and/or shoots the messenger.

12. uh yeah. that is pretty much the whole point of public relations.
I have no problem with it, if it's for a good cause. Good causes = my causes.

19. The time and money spent on this stunt could have achieved better results with other endeavors
The cost to construct a 2275 sq. ft. banner, deliver it and 11 people to South Dakota, plus the subsequent legal fees for 11 arrests could have purchased a lot of effective, less in-your-face advertising. How many minds have been changed by pissing people off?

Actions like this will get GreenPeace about as much support from the general public as Code Pink did.

23. exactly. and this stunt? epic fail. it doesn't get people talking about the issue...
it only gets people talking about the idiots at greenpeace.

greenpeace unfurled a banner on mt. rushmore. the message on that banner is lost in the over the top stunt. this action by greenpeace is the discussion, not the idea on the banner.

but then i'm sure that was their goal. it ups their protest cred within the feckless.

"dude, remember when we dropped that banner on lincoln's face? it was awesome."

11. I admire your ability to be inside my mind and know what I would do in random
and arbitrary circumstances, cause even I don't. That's a remarkable trait of yours. I was talking about this particular instance though.

28. The black hills are Sacred land to the Native Americans....
To carve the heads of the leaders of the people that destroyed many Native tribes in genocide and stole their lands and cultures was defacing a Sacred place to many Native Americans.
To carve those heads so that the people who's land was stolen had to look up at them every single day was another slap in the face to many people that hold the Mountains them self to be Sacred and Holy places of worship.
Think how you would feel if someone came into your churches and carved them up and defaced them.
You cant take down something carved into the heart and soul of a mountain.
Hanging a sign that is easy to remove and leaves no damage is not defacing.
Hanging a sign that speaks of helping the Earth is not a bad thing.

14. As Al Gore recently said...

"If you’re a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration."

2. The heat. Adds to the whole terrain thing.
3. THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY.

21. Love the message
and it's the perfect place to put it. Those concerned about the "defacing" of a national landmark should be more concerned about what is happening to the entire planet. Sheesh. Get a clue.
