So I'm watching MSNBC all day while working ............
...... Did Democrats disappear from the earth?

Everything seems to be w=right wing spew, wall to wall.

I am hot under the collar about heath care these days, but make no mistake, our BIGGEST problem can be summed up in one word: MEDIA.

For all the wonder of having solid liberals in anchor seats on MSNBC, the slant of that network is little different from all the others. Not one of them is doing anything apart from slanting the news to suit big money and corporate interests.

1. if it is any consolation, the total number of people
Watching TV itself, let alone news channels, is fairly low.

More and more people use their TVs as giant entertainment centers, and the typical family is over on the cable channels that let the kids watch Disney, or lets the adults watch box office hits, without the commercials.

The news gets its spike when something happens of great interest - yesterday's Jackson memorial or a Space shuttle crashing.

And many who do have the TV on to news all day are not really watching it any way.

13. That is exactly how our TVs are used.
My son works at Blockbuster, so there is even less tuning in to cable. I do find both my son and daughter watching the history channel more often than I would expect from teenagers, and my daughter is good at finding good independent films on cable. But it is mostly the News in the background, the kids' movies, and movie rentals for us.

4. It is important to distinguish between "social" liberals and economic "liberals."
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 03:06 PM by Jackpine Radical
The social liberals are with you on abortion, gay rights, racial equality, etc., but they quickly part company with the true liberals when the issue turns to equitable distribution of wealth. Single-payer health care would amount to the single largest redistribution of wealth from the top echelons to the workers since Social Security itself, eclipsing even Medicare.

Edited to add the point of all this: The so-called liberals in the media are (sort of) social liberals; they ARE NOT economic liberals. They serve the interests of the wealthy. The wealthy could give a shit about abortion, but they care mightily about taxation and preservation of private enterprise and the right of private interests to exploit the rest of us. War and energy are economic issues; that's why the press didn't tell the truth about things like Iraq and the energy "crisis."

7. Excellent points on which I fully agree
It simply isn't popular hereabouts to point that out in light of NBC's House Liberals.

I think the one exception may the one least liked. Schultz seems, to his credit, to be perfectly good with wealth distribution of the single payer type.

15. "Yuppie Bias"
The term is a bit dated now, but that's how I've explained what the media's "liberal bias" really is.

5. You're Right
The MSM drives the agenda by granting or denying access.

Remember the (MADD) Mothers Against Drunk Driving campaign?
That was an issue the media got behind and they did all sorts of
PSA advertising. Result: drunk driving became totally unacceptable,
new laws were passed. A win win for everyone.

They can promote anything they want but mostly they
prevent change by ignoring anything their corporate
owners tell them to.

8. What a great example!
I was working at a Big American Hospital back when the co founder of MADD was there daily as her beautiful little girl struggled back from the result of a drunk driver slamming she and her mother into a rock embackment. I remember her on the national TV campaign and being featured in some of the PSAs.

Yes, when they wish to, the media can, indeed, make things happen.

6. Heads I win, tails you lose media.....
Right-wing lunacy dominates the airwaves because the Democrats are in power.....And when the Republicans were in power, the reason for wall to wall coverage of right-wing bullshit was because "the Republicans are in power"...

14. I agree with all the posts here...But I have NO idea of what to do about it!
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 03:47 PM by whathehell
Does anyone?...I'm serious..I've emailed, called, etc. until I'm blue in the face...Nothing changes.

I've been so furious with Corporate Media (It is corporations, of course -- Even C-Span is sponsored by Corporations) that I considered applying for an internship with Media Matters or FAIR even though I'd have to leave my spouse amid move relocate, at least temporarily.

The reason I haven't, is because I'm not aware of what they actually DO to effect change...I'm not trying to fault them, but aside from preaching to the choir, I don't know what they do, or can do...Does anyone?

I would love to hear any practical suggestions..Because the Main$ream Media really DOES suck and has for some time!

re-instating the Fairness Doctrine, something I'm not, btw, opposed to.

9. People decide that MSNBC is liberal because of their primetime hosts
But from "Morning Joe" all the way to Chris Matthews, it's a love fest for big corporations.

18. *during work hours* (or more specifically, during market hours) it's all about the markets
and therefore it's all pro-corporations. the audience, even if it's not conservative overall, is looking for hot investment tips and thinking with a business mindset and so they are usually eager to pump up share prices and otherwise cheer on public corporations.

the sensible people are on outside of work hours.

here, we get cnbc. same blecch.
