Washington, D.C. recognizes same-sex marriage

An ordinance recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries went into effect today in the District of Columbia, and a member of the City Council said he planned to follow up with a measure to allow same-sex marriage in the city.

The bill recognizing the marriages was approved 12 to 1 by the City Council in May. Congress, which has the final say over the city’s laws, had 30 days to review the legislation. Since it took no action, the bill automatically became law.

Councilman David Catania is fine-tuning a bill that would allow same-sex marriages to be performed in Washington.

Thank you to the City Council except for Mr. Marion Barry. Thank you to David Catania for working on a bill to allow same-sex marriages to be performed in DC. It would be wonderful if he could accomplish that.
