Rep. Boner and that actor who I can't think of his name right now. :)

1. No, they just want people to think that they work outside.
People who work indoors are proletarians.

2. It denotes having the leisure time to devote to getting cancer
Being tan used to mean you did manual labor; now it means silly vanity and time to waste for some (some people still have to work in the sun).

3. Since the Industrial Revolution tanned skin implies leisure class,
Prior to that time only the working folks had tans from theit outdoor labors.

I would love to have darker skin,as two of my mixed race granchildren do. I envy them and hate my Irish, freckly skin.

PS - The actor you're thinking of is George Hamilton. Have to wonder how many face lifts and pre-malignant skin lesions he's had.

9. Why does anyone subject themselves to drastic change like that?
Edited on Mon Jul-06-09 07:44 PM by JuniperLea
When I was a kid, I was "brown as a berry," as my Mom used to say. Not because I didn't want to be white, but because when you spend most of your life on the surf and sand, you get brown. Sure, I had friends that came to the beach to get a tan, but for me, it was secondary to the waves, man.

What I don't get is how anyone can subject themselves to known cancer causing activity, have needles stuck in their lips to make it appear they've just been smacked around... hard, have fat sucked out of them... to get that awesome lumpy look, stick foreign objects in their eyes... daily, have phony bumps implanted in their chests... all because they think it will make them look better. Even orange guy thinks he looks better orange. Think about that. He truly thinks he looks good that way.

It's a freak show. Plain and simple; a freak show.

I never really think of myself as a very secure person... until I see the phony crap people do to themselves in the name of vanity. I'm damn secure, as it turns out.

It's an insipid question. If she really wants to know, she should walk up to a tan person and ask. If she gets an answer, fine. If she gets a black eye, then she'll know the answer to that other question... Is there a such thing as dumb questions?

But I can feel I'm too white sometimes - depending on lighting too or after winter. Even though you may not be too white, but I like the tan at night light better.

22. My friend with the shoe leather skin...
coincidentally enough, this friend was over the other day and was telling me that she had tried a self tanner on her face but was upset that when she washed her face, the self tanner came off in the sink.

OK...in her younger years she spent a LOT of time in the sun.

She is 66 now and looks ten years older...but even ten years ago she still looked very wrinkled.

I asked her why do people go to such lengths to get tanned skin...her answer was that it makes them look "healthy".

WTF?

My skin is very light. My cheeks are normally pink. I'm 56 but people often think I'm at least ten...maybe 15...years younger than that, because I never saw the sense of cooking myself in the sun like the other girls did.

So.....let me get this straight.

Someone with tanned (but wrinkled) skin looks "healthier" than someone with light (but relatively smooth) skin?

OOOOOkay! Whatever they say....

:eyes:

PS...the really sad thing about this friend...she's now going around buying up shit that's advertised as being "natural" because she doesn't want to harm her (wrinkled) complexion with chemicals. And she invests in all types of creams and lotions, believing that they'll stop, or maybe even reverse, the wrinkling.

sad...very sad....

I work 50+ hours a week and don't have an excessive amount of leisure time, nor am I a lazy, vane, cancer craving individual.

...if I get into the sun for even 30 minutes, I tan immediately. I have always been like this. I have brown eyes and brown hair ~~ still brown, very little gray at nearly 61. My son is blond with very light eyes ~~ and he got my olive skin. He tans like crazy. Looks like a Copper Tone ad.

I was a light guard in undergrad school and I cannot recall even at the beginning of the season having a burn. I just tan and, yeah, I know I am very lucky.

60. tanning and status have an interesting relationship
Used to be that people wanted pale skin, since that showed they didn't have to work or be out in the sun. Then it changed that people wanted tan skin since that showed they were people of leisure who could afford to lay around in the sun rather than having to work inside.

61. Not me.
My best friend laughed at me as I slathered on the sunscreen. Whenever she wanted to lay out to get a tan, I brought an umbrella. She looked gorgeous with her tanned body.

I looked her up about 20 years ago. Still gorgeous, but there were those beginning signs of sun damage. Tiny wrinkles here and there.

After 2 surgeries for brain aneurysm, 2 bouts with breast cancer, and a diagnosis of liver disease that put her on the transplant list, she died last February. Melanoma took her.

Color me white.
