Hyundai guarantees $1.49 gas for a year if you buy one of their cars

Good deal?

Hyundai Motor America said Tuesday it will launch an incentive program that guarantees the price of gasoline at $1.49 a gallon for a year for U.S. consumers who buy or lease its vehicles by Aug. 31, as the automaker looks to win over customers uncertain about the direction of fuel prices.

3. you're making me want to stick with the Nissan Versa base model
I was gonna consider the cheapest Hyundai, but the Versa rates higher. I need a newer car, and with the cash for clunkers program I can get one of these base models for about 6-7K. I'm better off with the Versa I guess, even with the 1.49 gas which would be great for a year!

11. Why don't you buy American?
Nissan's are pieces of crap. Electrical problems out the wazoo.

13. none of the American cars are cheap enough for what I can afford
I care give for someone that needs air, and I need an automatic - the cheapest with those options I can find are the Nissan and the Hyundai at 12800. I wouldn't be able to afford that, but with Congress' Cash for Clunkers program where I have to have a car that gets 28Mpg to get the full 4500 credit, I can get one to replace the '93 I have, with a new car for about 7K. I can afford those payments. Do you know of an American car that has AC and AUTO for that price? I only find those options in American for around 15K. I can't afford that.

14. i would go with a Toyota or Honda myself

If it was a full size truck I would say everything is decent nowadays with the exception of Dodge.

On small cars, Honda, Toyota, or Nissan would be my only options.

I got burnt on a couple of Fords in the 90's, turned me to Nissan, and now I'm a Toyota fan.

In my life I've had three brand new Fords that needed a total of 12 trips to the dealership for warranty work while I owned them. I've also had three used Nissans, two used Toyotas, and a Honda since then that have required a total of zero trips to the mechanic. That's just my experience though, opinions don't mean much around here ;)

4. What car doesn't loose $5k the moment you get the keys?
Unless you're talking about cars in awesome demand and long waits (Challenger SRT8, Corvettes, ?) a car always takes a significant hit.

Hundais make pretty decent cars and I wouldn't mind a Tiburon myself.

5. Private-party used vehicles dont lose a cent, and can often be bought under their "value"
And if you honestly really need the new car smell, it probably comes in a bottle these days. I have never, and will never, buy a new car.

7. don't tell to many people, they have to be new cars before they are used
I have always bought used, drove a few years, then sold while they are still in good running order. Just for example, the last three vehicles I have had covered 200,000 miles of driving. With the way I buy and sell it cost me about $8000 worth of value to own those three vehicles over the last 9 years.

Now if I had bought a similar new vehicle in 2000 for $20,000 and put 200,000 miles just it, I would be lucky if it was worth a couple of grand right now.

So I estimate I have cut my vehicle ownership costs in half buying used vs.new. You can also get a used car with more options cheaper than a stripped down new one of similar model.

9. Can you give some more concrete examples? The numbers have never made sense to me.
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 12:43 PM by ContinentalOp
You're saying you bought a used car for say $10k, put 60,000 miles on it over 3 years and sold it for $7500? Something like that?

The only personal example I can give is that I bought a new car for $18k and put 140k miles on it over a period of 10 years. So it cost me about 13 cents a mile (excluding taxes, maintenance, etc.)

8. People have been burned on used cars before.
Buying used is no guarantee of getting a value.

Plus the whole $5K thing is a misnomer.

New Honda Civic 2009 DX Manual
$14,296 invoice
$15,505 retail
$14,720 average (per edmunds)

2009 Honda Civic DX Manual
Used w/ 6000 miles & outstanding condition: $14,296

So they idea that every vehicle instantly loses thousands of dollars in value is not based on facts.
It is just a catchy phrase people say. "Don't buy new you will lose $5,000).

Cars depreciated based on the expected lifespan of the vehicles engine.

When you consider the total cost of a vehicle (purchase price + insurance + maintenance + fuel + repairs) the difference between new & used isn't a big as most people think.

What is more important is KEEP VEHICLES LONGER. People that trade out of their vehicle ever 2-3 years (steepest part of depreciation curve), put no money down, and roll over the negative equity are getting killed slowly.

12. I hear ya... Every car I'e ever had
Has been used.

My current ride is a '92 Talon TSI. I picked it up for about $6000 with 35k on the odometer. (mint)
When I get around 80k miles I'll probably get something else. I might keep it as a tuner or sell it.
If I can afford to keep it, I will. Even with minimal wrench time & money, a tsi can be very fast.
