I know some of you are really touched by the death of Michael Jackson and I guess I can understand your attachment to your Thriller album but snap out of it. Wacko Jacko was an adult who knew that popping pills and not eating was horrible for ones health, right? He could've changed his habits with a little self-determination and by surrounding himself with people who wouldn’t feed his addictions. Yeah, I've read he had a shitty childhood and was forced to work nonstop...I get it but sometimes you just have to let the past be in the past. I saw a video on CNN where the House of Representatives held a moment of silence for Michael Jackson on Friday. Do they do this for the troops that have been killed everyday in Iraq or Afghanistan? I'm sure they'd have to come up with something a little more honorable to say about the soldiers who have passed...I mean, they can't commit on their "style of dancing." For the record, 11 U.S. soldiers and 331 Iraqi Security Forces and Civilians have been killed this month. Since June 25th, 14 U.S. soldiers have been wounded in action. There have also been 38 coalition military fatalities this month in Afghanistan. So this is my moment of silence for those who have passed and who have not been acknowledged…One day our backwards country might get the bigger picture, until then Michael Jackson will flood our televisions, websites, and the ones who should be recognized will continue to slip through our hands.

I could care less about Michael Jackson’s death...my heart goes out to those who have passed and to their families.

and what is done to them.

10. Is that what merits "worth"?
We should only mourn the death of someone because they made albums, or movies?

Wow, the media really does tell us what to think.

The OP has a point. OUR GOVERNMENT sent those men and women to die in the desert, and they don't hold a moment of silence every time one of them dies. Yet they will for a man whose sole contribution to the world was to make music?

Those are some really screwed priorities.

(or less cold medicine)

I didn't think it was sarcasm... but I could be wrong.

Sometimes things don't come across quite right in print.

... if it was an icon that you cared about that had died?

"Why aren't those people going to funerals for the troops, instead of attending Rosa Park's funeral?"

32. Was I upset about it?
As in did I think it was fair that she got a big huge funeral and no one ever mentions the troops that are dying?

No, I don't think that was fair.

Of course, Rosa Parks contributed a lot more to society than Michael Jackson did. But, no, I still didn't think it's right that famous people dying, EVEN people that I was sad died and I fell made a contribution to society, get hours of TV coverage and elaborate funerals while we no one talks about the people who die in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They always do this.

And yes many Congressmen read a tribute to deceased soldiers into the record too.

Here's one for Corporal Brian Connelly

6. I was completely stunned by that.
Who ever thought that was appropriate? And the "news" media is still at it. OMG! We've lost 4 celebrities in a week!!! This is horrible!!! OMG!!!

Meanwhile, "In another bloody reminder of the war unleashed by the 2003 U.S. invasion, the U.S. military said four U.S. soldiers based in Baghdad had died of combat-related injuries on Monday. It gave no further details."

7. I understand some people mourn some more then others.
But I agree with OP, there needs to be some perspective. It seems to be promoting celebrity culture.

Around 8000 people die every day inside USA

170,000 people die every day world wide. I agree with OP, people need to get some perspective. Grieve or mourn as they see fit, but this celebrity stuff is a bit much.

Very good idea.
So this is my moment of silence for those who have passed and who have not been acknowledged…

18. So you don't think Michael Jackson made an impact during his life?
To pass off the positive influence he's had on Tens of Millions of people's lives is pretty stupid. He is the third largest recording artist in the past 60 years and it would have been an oversight if they didn't recognize his cultural significance. It's not like they had a moment of silence for Rick James or anything.

35. Hahah love the Rick James
comment and I agree MJ is probably the biggest American entertainer since Elvis. Just because one person could care less about MJ and hated his music does not negate the fact that he was a Global Icon.

Everyday that Congress is in session, both houses should pause for a moment of silence for our troops.

but that doesn't mean that MJ shouldn't be honored after his sudden death.

26. Can you read, or do you normally just react? Not my soapbox.
From VetVoice:

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives held a moment of silence for the Man in the Mirror. Okay. Fine. But do they hold a moment of silence each time a service member they've sent to Iraq or Afghanistan dies in combat? I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

And the woman who wrote this piece did a tour in Iraq. The link is at the top of the OP in case you missed it.

Have you done your tour(s)?

I haven't, but am quite willing to give them a voice here.

It's just tough shit if you don't like it.
