Ousted Honduran leader to return
The ousted president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, has said he will return home later this week, after being forced into exile on Sunday.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8125668.stm

Addressing a meeting of leaders from the Organization of American States (OAS) in Nicaragua, Mr Zelaya invited other leaders to accompany him.

(snip)
Speaking on Monday in the capital of Nicaragua, Managua, Mr Zelaya said he would return to Honduras on Thursday, after addressing the UN in New York on Tuesday.

Mr Obama said he would work with the OAS to restore Mr Zelaya to office.

The US president said a "terrible precedent" would be set if the coup was not reversed.

1. Thursday and there was a great report on al Jazeera showing people
all over the country arranging cars and buses to go meet him,

Btw, protesters prevented the coup president's "inaugural" today.

2. That sound you hear is a collective groan from all the people who tried to paint Obama
as another patsy of the unseen forces that really run the world for corporate benefit :eyes:

17. This wasn't about Obama, though, it was about these people:

21. Except for the people who, the moment this happened, started saying
"Oh, no WAY this happened without Obama saying it was alright. He's one of THEM!"

This was after the article came out earlier in the day about how the US and Sec. Clinton had already tried to avert the coup.

3. His return to the country doesn't mean his return as President...
Sadly, he still faces a really difficult situation, although I'd say his odds today are much better than yesterday.

5. True...
I can see them doing a repeat of the whole thing in slow motion (congressional votes, supreme court rulings etc.) and then ending up back where they are now.

6. The golpistas have zero support. The rats are going to start jumping
if they aren't already, imho.

9. They don't have zero support...
Not only they have the military, but a sizable amount of people support them, mostly because of disinformation. It is far from the majority (I'm not convinced Zelaya has a majority either...), but they do exist, and they aren't only rich people.

I do hope they start jumping ship soon, though. I read some reports today of an army battalion turning against the new "President", although I haven't seen much confirmation.

They do have some popular support -- just as you'd expect in a democracy.

I heard some of those reports re the military, too, but they remain unconfirmed last I knew, arcos. ALBA is withdrawing embassadors, the US is talking about withdrawing resources, the neighboring countries are talking about closing the borders. It looks pretty crappy for the golpistas, imo.

12. Oh yeah, definitely! They have ZERO international support...
As it should be. And they will not get it. All Central American countries are withdrawing their ambassadors too, and so did Brazil. Most other countries will follow.

If they are able to maintain control, Honduras will be absolutely isolated at least until the next President takes office, early next year.

13. Can Honduras even survive that long without US support?
They are somewhat dependent on aid and remittances?

29. Yes, it would be very, very hard...
An analyst was saying on the radio today that he doesn't think they would even be able to stand 3 months.

We'll see... hopefully the UN General Assembly will be strong today.

16. No fucking shit - as if simply living in Honduras means they're automatically right
Fuck that. George W Bush lives in the United States. I guess by that logic, we should have all bowed down to him during his presidency, and kidnapped any foreign dignitaries from countries who criticized him.

the folks in the Dungeon do not mince words; one person quite seriously wondered if I was a member of Hizbu'llah. This in addition to either Odin or Ohio (my sincere apologies if it was one of the other goons) speculating as to my rank within the Taliban consultate here in Oregonistan. Apparently I wear many hats, and all of them bash American Idol.

Hugo has something called referendums, and when they fail, the constitution remains unchanged.
