1. voted #1 with minor reservations....
I mean, sure, there are lots of things that I still want to do, so arguably my job does not completely fulfill me, but it's everything I want it to be, and it gives me the time and headspace to work on those other things, so I cannot complain.

2. I went for 2, but these days I DO feel lucky to be working.
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 08:02 PM by Jackeens
My company has made a third of its employees redundant in the last 18 months, so you have to feel lucky to be hanging in there. Which, of course, is exactly how your employer wants you to feel.

3. Well... it was plan "B"...
The first time "executive secretary" came out of my mouth, I was sixteen. Now that I am one, I'm actually an "executive assistant" 'cuz we don't use the word "secretary" anymore, unless you are an officer of a company.

Actually, it was further down the list:

A - Rock Star

B - Broadway Baby

C - Oceanographer

D - Executive Assistant

Plan "D"... but it's uber cool! I get to demand excellence, and I make things happen!

34. I'm a mathematical programmer....
solving mathematical problems via computer for a medium-ish size company. Office is about 10 blocks from where I live, smack in the middle of downtown. Decent pay, good benefits; fun, smart people to work with. I like the customer-service side of the job (computer system is for 200-400 company employees), as well as the straight-up intellectual challenges of the job. I really lucked out to find this one.

I have high blood pressure, so losing my job is a death sentence.

EDITED TO ADD: I HATE my job with the fire of ten thousand suns.

7. Wish I could help
I work for a non-profit health education foundation, and our top priority is helping people. Are you into only "modern Western" medicine, or are you into alternatives as well? If the latter, PM me for some ideas to help with the BP.

6. I work for a nonprofit
helping those with health issues and teaching folks how to stay healthy. Love the fact that we give help to others without demanding a ton of money for it.

35. Another non-profit here
though in a different area. My first love is the arts, and this is connected, though not all arts. The plus though is a very flexible schedule, and terrific co-workers. Workng in the arts left me constantly frustrated trying to balance work and family. For now, this is an excellent place to be!

And while nonprofit work generally doesn't pay magnificently, there are all those ancillary feel-good benefits - knowing what you do makes a difference is worth such a great deal!

The job itself is clerical but the circumstances and boss are pleasant, a nice change from what I often had in the past. I am almost seventy so pleasant circumstances help a lot.

10. Other. I love my job, but it doesn't pay worth crap, and it's not what I had in mind.
I once made three times the money I do now, but the stress would have killed me if I kept doing it.

I live a much simpler life now by choice, but I worry that it'll be too hard to make ends meet.

12. Other...
...self employed doing things that I like (multi media graphic arts/graphic design and application for the entertainment and garment industries; music performance and production).

Occasionally I do not care for the people or the situation(s) I may be dealing with, but ultimately, it is well worth it.

The negatives to self employment are, I'm sure, self-evident, such as, currently, no health coverage. That is probably my biggest concern at this point.

14. Blissfully retired. Which beats the hell out of any job I ever had.
Dishwasher - We were able to steal beer from the fridge while working
Furniture mover - Refrigerators are heavy
Marine - 4 endless years of doing absolutely nothing of benefit to anyone
Electrician - Zzzzaap!!
Anodyzer - Electroplating aluminum using various acids - as miserable a job as it sounds
Postal Clerk - boring, but bought the books while in college
Hair dresser - My ex-wife owned a salon and I thought it was an easy way to make big bucks - listening to rich ladies bitch and gossip is REALLY boring
Postal Carrier - Nice doggie
Employee Assistance Counselor (Postal Service)- Ever hear of "Going Postal"? That's the kind of folks I talked to for 10 years
Labor Relations Assistant - Got booted out because I sided with the employees
Personnel Instructor - The only job I actually liked...sometimes.

Retired - When I can't make a decision of what to do, I put it off 'til tomorrow and go back to sleep.

16. It's hot, filthy, dangerous and generally unpleasant but it pays well.
I did not aspire to become a construction electrician but apparently all the rock star jobs were taken by talentless transvestites and heroin addicts in the late 80's/early 90's. It's not all bad but this is not what I planned to do with my life. I hate the hours and most of the people on job sites are idiots but I'm actually quite good at it and recognized for it. It's a union gig so the pay is good and the benefits are top of the line. Overall it's just okay. It's better than having a crappy job with crappy pay.

Times are tough but I got lucky to catch on with a company that has most of the work in the city. I'm hoping to hang on with them until things break open again.

18. voted OTHER -- not the job i "always wanted" but it IS the job
that surprisingly fulfills me and challenges me and that I really truly love.

Doesn't pay well -- not for the education required to do it -- and it's stressful.

The job I "always wanted" was to be an academic, respected by my peers, paid well and with plenty of time for travel, etc. -- and I thought cuz I excel at research and analysis that this would be where I'd be most useful. Was building the kudos, the awards, etc. but a few years ago I chose to leave the field.

The job I have -- I'm a social work supervisor and I work with foster families. And the fact that I love it is what surprises me! There's no glory in it. And like I said not a lot of pay. But boy do I make a difference to a bunch of people's lives!

I'm looking elsewhere. I like what I actually do, there's just not much of it to do. I sit around a few hours every day trying to "look" busy. No prospects of a raise anytime soon, had to take a second job, they no longer match on 401k, etc.

31. Mostly harmless
My job uses my expertise, is on what I find to be the right side politically, gives me authority to create some modest local change, and pays well.

On the other hand, I still work for some with a lack of understanding and true vision, so it is not all it could be.

It is not "what I always wanted to do" nor does it leave me totally satisfied, but it is a great job...I'm an art director for one of the top political ad agencies in the country -- Democratic clients only. What's not to love?

But I'd still rather be cartooning or illustrating full time.
