I support the ousting of the dictatorial Honduran ex-President
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 08:54 PM by Simplyaverage
Imagine for a second that our Supreme Court reached a decision, and the President ignored it.
(The Honduran Supreme Court ruled recently that the referendum set to occur in a few days was unconstitutional, yet the President went ahead with it).

What would we think?

Imagine if our congress had also declared unconstitutional the same thing the SC declared unconstitutional (this is what happened in Honduras). What would we think about the President if he ignored this ruling as well? Wouldn't we deem him/her a threat to the United States of America?

What if our Congress ruled that another President must be appointed? Would we fight that?

Did the Honduran President think there was one branch on the Honduran government?

5. No, they are selectively reporting the "facts". Makes a better narrative.
But notwithstanding the OP's insightful "rest of the story", it's somewhat ridiculous for the US to tip-toe around N Korea and Iran, but get ready to do some serious butt kicking with little Honduras just because of ideological sympathy with the ousted asshole. Strange times.

I know I've got nowhere near enough credible information for a responsible take.

11. Twitter is the ultimate application for going off half cocked
Some analysis is beginning to come in, but unless one has a lot of personal knowledge and history with the country and what's really going on- then even that's still a bit sketchy.

14. Yeah. It was an attempted right wing military coup.
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 09:23 PM by EFerrari
The president and his party were trying to get a vote on a referendum and the generals blocked him. They also killed a leading lefty politician that was looking to succeed him.

The military leadership in Honduras have been assholes as long as we have been feeding them.

7. It was a non-binding referendum. Why not let the people decide?

Because right-wingers hate democracy.

The Honduran people should decide if this guy stays in office, not the Honduran military.

Hopefully Chavez will provide money to an insurgency.

10. RW logic is so very twisted. Elected Latin American leaders are dictators but
fascist military coups overthrowing a democratically elected government is OK(good for bidness donchaknow).

4. Zelaya must be President until his mandate expired

That's how it works in a democracy.

Changed your mind? Interesting turn you took.

Er, welcome to DU. Did you know we have a search feature?

BTW, the Honduran Supreme Court ruled against the non-binding referendum being held at the same time as the national election in November. The shorthand for that in the corporate media is that their Supreme Court ruled the referendum unconstitutional.

And, OMFG, I agree with cali?!!!! Someone just shoot me now! Hi, cali. :hi:

19. President Zelaya was not a dictator but a popularly elected president.
Right wing coups usually take out popular presidents, not dictators, or the people would just do it themselves.
