1. What really matters is how well your state protects consumers. An ins. company can be better in one
state & worse in another because state laws allow them to be.
And until you've had to collect a major claim, you really don't have a clue how good/bad they are.

16. Same here. They've been VERY good.
Well, in my case not as long as 1970, but no complaints from me.

3. Back when buyblue.org was still up and running,
Progressive really was marked as progressive. Don't know if that would still be the case today though.

I have Traveler's for auto and homeowners...no real idea what they're like as we've never (knock on wood) needed to file a claim. We switched to them after State Farm pulled out of Florida entirely b/c of hurricane risk (we live in Missouri, but it just seemed like a shitty thing to do). Plus they'd just raised our rates 30% and would give us neither a price break nor an explanation of why they'd gone up, other than "we're restructuring our rates for each zip code across all service areas".

I would say try to do a little Google-hunting on a few companies you're trying to decide between and see what you can turn up, if anything. But don't be surprised if the news isn't good. Usually most insurance companies, health or auto, back the party that is less likely to write up new regulations for them to adhere to that benefit consumers -- and that party ain't us.

4. I have The Hartford.
Best choice if you are over 50 and join AARP. I have had it for quite a few years now and am totally satisfied.

5. Same here - and even if you are already with Hartford, the AARP versions saves $$$
We were with them through our bank and when we joined AARP, I called in to see if I could save anything - and save over $300 per year for our two vehicle policy.

Of course, we have never had a claim so if there was an accident, I might have a totally different opinion!

8. Ameriprise through Costco
I haven't had to file any claims, but get a healthy discount having homeowners & auto. My Mom has it too and had a pretty hefty homeowners claim and they were great.

Good luck shopping!

10. We have Grange Insurance. Our premiums are quite low. When
we were hit by a truck that blew a red light, they were marvelous not just about making sure we were compensated for our destroyed car but following our personal recovery, too.

13. Liberty Mutual is really good insurance. Rates are great and their service is wonderful. They pay
without hassles and are always helpful and on your side. Also, they have those wonderful commercials about "personal responsibility" and they seem to do a pretty good job of it. Anyway, that's been our experience and we have had them for over 20 years.

15. i have been very happy with auto-owners . . . so far.
they are dropping my condo contents insurance next year because i live in florida and we have hurricanes (2 bad seasons out of 27 and they go all nuts! :eyes: ). i am not sure what i will do about my auto insurance if i cannot get a discount for my homeowner's.

i will NEVER buy from allstate or state farm again, tho'. allstate because they cancelled me without warning and state farm because of how they are trying to gouge floridians with hazard insurance. i am hoping the state will throw out their auto business too but that won't happen as long as our repug legislature is made up of insurance agents.

i may have to go with aarp.

Someone who has similar political beliefs doesn't automatically mean they're there for you...

19. I have GMAC and I filed a major claim about seven months ago.
Husband totalled the family car just before Thanksgiving.

I have never had such an easy, smooth, pleasant experience. The adjuster came to our house, explained the paperwork clearly, let us read it, was very nice. I even got some money back on the car (we were still paying on it!!)
ABSOLUTELY recommend - oh, and my premium is not out of range now, either. I'm carrying a couple of liabilites (not me, but husband, lol) on my insurance "history" and I still have full coverage on two cars (one a 95, the other an 03) for $298/month. Trust me, for what we've done to cars in the last 4 years, that is very good.

I don't know their politics, however. I had to go with who would insure me for what I needed.

21. Stay away from Nationwide
I started working there in 95 as a contractor doing Y2K (part time, also was doing work at several other places), joined as an employee in 2000 and walked out in 06. They were great when I first started there, a really good company. Their rates were kind of high when you first joined but pretty consistently went down the longer you were with them. Now... The way they are rating policies is pretty fucked and getting worse. They call it "Matrixing" and they want to include every aspect of your life (credit included) to determine your rates... and this is for auto.

They were also a very good place to work in how they treated their employees... not so much anymore. They have been outsourcing to India as much as they can and laying off people here in Columbus and other places. A lot of good people out of work now and their jobs being done overseas and more to come.

They screwed us all big time when they decided they wanted to start a bank. We had a credit union for years (and years) and they decided they wanted to buy it out to start their bank. They made an offer and sent out a pamphlet to everyone telling us how great it was. The last page told us what would happen if we voted against them. They would no longer allow the CU to use the NW name, kick them off of all offices, no longer do direct deposit or payroll deductions with them... pretty much put them out of business. It was a wicked scumbag move but... they have their bank now.

I will never give them another cent.

22. WE have a great AG in CT, Dick Blumenthal. I trust him to be on the lookout for bad
guys in insurance. I would hate to lose him as AG but I think he would be a great governor. Also, I wish he would run for Senator. He is so good. He's a crusader for consumers and I love him. He would be so fabulous in the US Senate. I just don't know if he wants to...

26. Actually, e-surance is Blue. And has treated us pretty decently with the two claims.
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 07:38 PM by haele
we have had to make over the past 7 years. They sent someone out quickly and we got the check within a week of claims.
The commercials are tacky, but the pricing and coverage is reasonable - and not linked to your credit report (or we would be paying out the ass), and even though I have an issue with not being able to work with the monthly computerized billing if there's a financial issue at home, the customer service is otherwise very good (24-7) and I can quickly get roadside service and not get dinged for calling when I've had to. (you can go yearly if you want - but with our car type, two drivers - one with a disability and a driving record - and the area we live in, the yearly outlay of around $800 is a bit more than I could afford at one time) And they now include motorcycle, boat, renter's and home-owner's insurance, also at reasonable prices.
If you don't like the idea of e-surance, when I owned a home, I insured both my home and my truck with AAA. Though I never filed a claim, they seemed to be the best at the time. The only pain with AAA is that I had to keep up with the AAA membership, and that gets to expensive if you forget to renew.

Oh, husband just reminded me. USAA has opened their insurance policies to the general public, and they don't seem to be going the way of GEICO, which once it went public, started sucking big elephant balls. If you've got a good record, you might want to look there, they take their insurance policies seriously.
As for progressive, well, USAA is run by a bunch of retired Air Farce flag officers. But they do have a reputation for sober, honest dealings and they still take that reputation seriously.

Haele

+1

I do all of my banking and insurance through this company. They are always a pleasure to do business with. Only military and family members of military are eligible to apply for their service.
