If I ever belittle someone's grief because I have such an inflated opinion of myself ...
as a seriously important person with time only for seriously important thoughts, and that anyone who deigns to grieve for an individual whom I find insufficiently serious and important, please, somebody kick my ass.

2. Sometimes the issue isn't the grieving itself but whether the forum is appropriate.Would you air
your grief extensively at an employee meeting at your job?
Somehow, the internet permits people to do things they wouldn't in non-internet life.

8. Anonymity makes people brave,
and they do a lot of things online that they'd never do in real life.

It certainly allows some folks to let down whatever inhibitions they might have had about some things - hence, the very profitable porn industry and Gov. Sanford's present predicament - but that might not be all that healthy.

I honestly don't know.......................

9. Since this particular forum is an internet message board entitled "General Discussion" ...
it occurs to me that it might be an appropriate place for people to express their grief. Or is GD also an employee meeting at your job?

parent if a stranger has such an effect? I really cannot comprehend feeling grief for the death of a stranger.

Sadness, yes. Compassion for the ones who were close to the person, yes. Acknowledgement that the person enriched many people's lives, yes. But grief - no.

I'm sure people will take offense. I guess everyone has a different semantic understanding of "grief".

This is a public forum. I wonder if these same people are expressing their grief to strangers who are not virtual?

Since you made the comment in the public forum, I felt equally permitted to respond with my honest view.

I do hope all who are torn up over the various celebrities' deaths are able to adjust and move on.

6. I don't understand why some people feel the need to tell others how to "properly" display or
experience their grief. Though I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised.

7. What about people who post
and ask what's going on because they don't understand it?

Is that perceived as "belittling," when it is genuine confusion?

I haven't seen anyone here make any less of what people are experiencing, but I have posted, wondering what was going on. Others have, as well.

Is it only that the mourners are allowed to post about what they're feeling, and anyone not sharing that feeling, wondering what it all means, are precluded from asking?

Because that sure does take the D out of DU.....................

17. No because you did not answer my question.
You may be an asshole with low self esteem, but I am sure you have been told that often. Why do I need an inflated ego to belittle you. Maybe I just want to.

Anyone who belittles another person's grief is an asshole. And it is possible to do so without having an inflated opinion of one's self. That specifically answers your query.
How curious that someone with your avatar seems to lack even a rudimentary comprehension of plain English.

24. So I what you seem to be saying is,
that is possible for me to belittle your grief without my having an inflated ego. Now was that so hard? Your assumption as to what makes one an asshole is somewhat arbitrary and I am not sure I care enough to know any more about you or your thought process.

20. Rather transparent, but, does feeling differently mean I have an "inflated opinion" of myself?
I've spent over six decades in this country. I've buried my own beloved dead. If you want to compare that to what you and others feel because MJ died, tragically and too young, have at it. But, respectfully, some of us have experienced enough heartache to distinguish between sadness and soul-tearing, speechless sobbing grief.

I DO respect your right to feel differently. I AM a liberal, after all.

Won't you respect mine?

27. It's different when a DUer dies or a family member of a DUer,
isn't it? No one would think of posting crude jokes or deeming threads "inappropriate", would they? Even DUer's pets are grieved here. That's what makes us different than the "other" site.

Most of the world is grieving his death, as I am. I'm a 53 y.o. white woman and I know we've lost a great talent. I know of no other entertainer who sold out 50 concerts in a matter of hours. Not the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, not even Elvis.

I believe the hide thread option should be used if one cannot keep poor taste to themselves regarding death.

There is more to life than politics. Sorry about that. Maybe we need a DU group, the Grief group. There would be more space on GD for threads about Obama's dog.

You've arrogantly belittled so much genuine grief,
I suspect that you just invited about one person out of every 3
on this planet to kick your ass.

Be careful what you wish for: sometimes you get it.
