Three "celebrities" died this week..

The death of Ed McMahon at 86 is not an occasion for sadness but for saluting and celebrating a life well led. I like so many had many hours of enjoyment watching the tonight show.. and the times Ed gave Johnny as good as he got were a lot of fun..

The death of Farrah Fawcett was an occasion for great sadness.. Some one who started out as a beautiful, but seemingly shallow sex symbol proved her worth as an actress in following years and later still in one of the most gallant and tenacious fights against cancer I have seen.. I doubt I would have the strength to put up a fight like that. Even in her heydays she was a classy beautiful lady.. Lindsay Lohen, Brittney Spears ... etc could learn many lessons on how to handle themselves.

The death of Michael Jackson was an occasion for pity for a man given soo much talent and money and ended up wasting it away on fear, paranoia and drugs. I have no doubt the origins of his problems were in his unique childhood, but once he became an adult he had access to all the resources he would even need to get help and work thru his issues..

2. And how many troops we don;t know the names off, and will never care about
died this week too?

How many homeless people? No family, not a soul that cares about them.

This is the real tragedy. We elevate some people, but forget the rest.

My two cents

Let the circus continue... and lets see how much more news is hidden in the meantime.

6. This point is made everytime the world stops to remember a member of its collective culture
and its an unfailingly stupid statement every time its used.

9. Of course it is, CONSUME... go on
CONSUME.... that is exactly what those in the shadows desire you to do

By the way, I am willing to bet a dime on the dollar that the most incessant coverage of this OUTSIDE the US, where MJ was actually bigger is not as bad as our press.

Free clue, we did not have a head of state pass on

11. Not stupid at all.
And, BTW, the world didn't stop. The easily influenced and distracted may have stopped, but world continues -- there is still turmoil in Iran, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a heath care debate, global warming, child soldiers in Africa, a financial system in free fall that threatens to turn all but the most wealthy in to feudal serfs, etc.

MJ may have given you music you enjoy but please, don't assume everyone feels that way and don't try to force your adulation of him onto others or criticize those who don't feel that way. Maybe in time you'll come to see this.

18. I don't have an adulation of MJ, what I do have is low tolerence for those who think that the world
needs to revolve around what they deem important 24/7. They are the worst enablers of the 24 hour media.

5. Yes, and how many people in Iraq were killed by bombers
this week, and of course the Repukes blame Obama for the "drawdown". How long does it take to train Iraqis to police/secure their own country anyway?

10. I think any time an entertainer dies we should celebrate their talent
Edited on Sat Jun-27-09 01:14 PM by Merlot
I listend to MJ's music for the first time in years (was never really my type) and it was very happy, upbeat music. Some of the songs had a good message (man in the mirror) and some were just beautiful (9 years old singing with an emotional connection well beyond his years).

I think entertainers would rather we celebrate their body of work instead of being sad. There was a lot to be sad about when MJ was alive, every time I looked at a picture of him or heard all the weird stories, it was sad to remember what a dynamic handsome young man he was. So now I prefer to just celebrate his talent.

12. Celebrate is one thing, nonstop coverage on all major networks and cable
stations is way way over the top for anyone, except a head of state. Go ahead and celebrate, by all means but please don't try to force your feeling about MJ onto others.

Celebrities entertain and provide a distraction from the events of everyday life. When that entertainment becomes the center of one's life, what an empty life that must be.

16. "Force my feeling about MJ onto others?"
Read my post, I really didn't care much for his music. My post was about all entertainers. I don't have TV so I'm missing the media coverage of MJ. I had my moment, listened to his music, and moved on.

13. Also, Sky Saxon
lead singer of The Seeds, major innovator of that punk pop psychedelic sound of the sixties. Probably pretty minor to most people, but major to rockers.

I refuse to apologize for morning the passing of those who were cultural influences in my life. MJ and Ed a little, but Farrah and Sky for sure.

14. 250 died in various bombings in Iraq as they prepare for the departure
of troops from their cities. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5939492

I would imagine every one had people who loved them, who will mourn their loss, who will miss them in days to come.

Hundreds died across the US this week. I would imagine every one...and so on.

But three celebrities died, and the world stops.

15. you are right, of course
It is disgusting they way the media has been ignoring Iraq in general not to mention the horrible events of the past couple of days, but I do think it is possible to morn and be aware of both.
