"It has been a privilege to work for KABC and Citadel and Disney. The future? I don't know what it will bring. I hope good things. I will do my best to get better," said talk host Al Rantel, closing out a 10-plus years career at KABC/790 AM with a two-hour farewell show Thursday night featuring Doug McIntyre and Rantel's successor, John Phillips.
Rantel, 53, was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2007. But he recovered and is cancer-free. In 2008, he slipped on an oil puddle in his apartment complex parking lot. Since then, after hip and shoulder surgery, he has been in chronic pain and unable to be in a seated position for a long time. So it was decided he should retire from radio. He is going to Vancouver for two months of rehab and therapy starting in July.
