Thank God... "Supreme Court Says Strip Search of Student Was Illegal"
WASHINGTON June 25, 2009, 03:42 pm ET · The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that school officials violated an Arizona teenager's rights by strip-searching her for prescription-strength ibuprofen, declaring that U.S. educators cannot force children to remove their clothing unless student safety is at risk.

In an 8-1 ruling, the justices said that Safford Middle School officials violated the Fourth Amendment ban on unreasonable searches with their treatment of Savana Redding. The court ruled that the officials could not be held financially liable but left it to lower courts to decide if the school district could.

While children's advocates and civil liberties groups cheered the decision, others suggested the high court may have created further problems for school systems by failing to make clear exactly when school administrators can strip search

It's about damn time someone got this decision right. It's pretty sad it had to go all the way to the SCOTUS.

1. I have a good idea of when a school administrator can strip search
NEVER. That solves that little problem. If they think they have legal probable cause, they can call the cops and get it handled properly, if not, tough shit.

6. Don't have a link, but
the town was in eastern AZ, and the girl in question was strip searched for prescription strength Tylanol. None was found, and the girl who accused her of having the pills later admitted she had said so because she wanted to get the the girl in question in trouble. To make matters worse in my eyes, the girl in question was a straight arrow, honor student type who had never been in trouble. I'm sure that factor also entered into the judge's decision--there just was no probable cause to have this done.

9. This is blatant sex discrimination, in my opinion.
Zero tolerance policies for non-prescription drugs are aimed at girls. Why?

They are always searching girls for non-prescription ibuprofen. This is the only over the counter medication that relieves menstrual cramps.

Many young girls have disabling cramps every single month and this kind of search for drugs disproportionately affects girls.

Believe me, I was a young girl back in the sixties and we did not have any effective pain relievers for menstrual cramps.

The first time I got an NSAID was in 1980, and it was the first drug that did relieve my cramps. However, there is no medication for the extreme fatigue except for bed rest.
