Because, sad to say, it could happen.

I think perhaps the story should be pursued, but in the TABLOIDS, or in the Lounge, not where we are trying to do serious news.

6. Oh come on. A little longer? It's gotta be hell for the Family Values Hypocrites
Poor schmucks, wondering, wondering:
Did I cover my tracks? Did someone track my cell phone? Could some newspaper be sitting on evidence, waiting to spring? Is my wife gonna put ground glass in my taters? Is my assistant's birth control reliable? Am I on any airport security video? Has Larry Flynt written a check to an informant who provided evidence on ME?

It's not about Sanford. It's about the lot of them. And a lot of them SHOULD be sweating for a spell.

The wound of it isn't over for his wife or his kids.

And the far-right fundies have one more thing to weigh before they invoke the Bible to condemn any progressive initiative.

87. The Fundy Brothers & Sisters of Sanctimonious Control Freaks have been quiet lately
Havocdad commented on the fact that we have not heard much of anything from the media whore fundy leaders of late. Says they seem to have gone to ground in fear of SOMETHING the past several weeks.

Between one of OR's adherents murdering a much maligned (by them) doctor and the bouquet of Family Values spoutin, winger endorsed GOP pols who have had to fess up their laundry lists of sins, the 'spiritual leaders' from the fundy pews seem to be scurrying for cover. No bully pulpit rhetoric from them coming down hard on the hypocrisy of the pols they have supported. Not so much as a comment about the weather.

Havocdad has a good point. We wonder if Larry Flynt placing a bounty on private sinners who dare to publicly pontificate on how everybody else has to behave to be tight with their version of God. We wonder if Larry Flynt placing bounties on the hypocrites may be why some pols are fessing up and confessing. In a bad economy, there has to be more bounty hunters than usual. Must be tough to live in fear of being caught with yer pants down when you have build a career on telling others to keep theirs buttoned up.

No, this ain't over by a long shot, cuz it's not about Sanford. It's about an agenda by people who want us to do as they say, not as they do while they also insist on denying rights of a chunk of the population that never did any harm.

15. TPM's unanswered questions...
"Here are just a few of the more obvious ones:

1) What prompted Sanford to come clean? If he hadn't been caught at the airport by that reporter for the State, would he have stuck to the Appalachian story?

2) Speaking of which, did he voluntarily tell the State's reporter that he had been in Argentina? Or did she find out by looking at his luggage tag, or some other way? And what about that report that the paper had the goods on the guv already, and used this trip to nail him?

3) Why did it take a six-day trip to break off the affair? Not to sound cold, but couldn't a difficult phone call -- or at least a one day trip for a face-to-face conversation -- have done the job?

4) If the trip really was just to break off the affair, and Sanford's wife had found out about it five months ago, as the governor suggested, why couldn't he tell her where he'd gone?

5) It looks like Sanford has in the past been to Argentina on the taxpayers' dime. Did he see his girlfriend on any of those trips?"

22. I love gossip as much as anyone, especially when it's one of them.
However, it's distracting discourse away from what we are trying to accomplish. It was on KO tonight and Rachel Maddow and the important things weren't really covered very much like some really brutal activities in Iran. This is tabloid stuff and of course something South Carolina needs to deal with. The problem for me was that Obama spent an hour talking about our health care problems, coast to coast, on broadcast TV and there were hardly any threads on it here. There won't be anything in the newspapers either because this scandal will be what they go with.

And until we learn if this marriage can be salvaged from the wreckage or if the wife takes the kids and moves to Connecticut.

And until we find out how much public cash was at work in the governor's travel itineraries to Buenos Aires.

And until Rick Warren flies in to offer spiritual guidance for the first family of South Carolina.

45. And what the GOPigs have not internalized yet
is that this is now the time of the Internet(s) tubes, and everything they've ever said or done can be called up in an instant. I honestly think that's the biggest hurdle they face, understanding that things have changed in terms of information delivery. And until they catch on to that, they're out of the game.

I don't see them picking it up until the 2016 elections. Seriously. Because they are going to have to take that long to nurture young new talent - if they can find any.

Meanwhile, I am loving this Sanford thing, and I honestly think we've just seen the beginning of it.

And, not for a minute has anyone forgotten Ensign.

49. Agree on all counts. The GOP has no Reagan anymore. Of course they
didn't really have him when they did have him, since his brain, such as it was to start with, had atrophied long before Iran-Contra.

It's been kinda downhill for them since then. They've milked the family values cow until the cow just keeled over dead. Majorities now support stem cell research, reproductive freedoms, and even same-sex marriage. The Far Right has become the GOP, more or less, and they're being defined by insane people on the far margins. They spew hate speech over the radio. They shoot physicians in Kansas. They murder museum guards in DC.

That's the handbill and ain't nobody lining up for the freak show.

You do a zoom lens on future GOP talent. "If they can find any." Exactly right. A white male war hero, a guy whose boots the media have licked for decades, just lost to an Afro-American community organizer.

Yoo-hoo, you Republicans. Your futures look kinda foggy.

Even if they're spineless, I love having a Democratic majority in Congress.

I love that the deconstruction of Reagan has begun, ever so slowly, with people talking out loud about how his policies - ah, yes, let's deregulate everything - led us to where we are today, including so many mentally ill homeless out there because that mofo emptied the mental hospitals.

And ketchup is a vegetable.

57. Yes. Reagan. A president with out an idea in his head, literally, and one of the
most venal cabinets that could have been assembled.

A dark time. I did the best I could to navigate through it -- yet another 8-year period of quasi-exile -- and just cranked up the Jackson Browne albums.

I love Jimmy Carter the man but resent that he did not build on his initial popularity. He had the demographics at the beginning to build a new Democratic majority and it fell to pieces awfully fast. I took the Reagan landslide in 1980 very personally. I wondered how my fellow citizens could fire a good man and replace him with a mindless fool.

Barack Obama was not given much of a chance to win the nomination. He upset the expectations and went on to crush the hapless John McCain like a stale Frito. It really is a good time to be a Democrat. Obama impresses me but also delights me. I feel as if a resolute adult is in charge now.

65. Here's a story for you, my dear -
Back in the late seventies, I went to work for a downtown DC law firm. Fancy little boutique firm, and my immediate boss was Charles S. Murphy.

He had great credentials, Charlie did, but the most inspiring thing about him was how much he hated Nixon.

I mean, he hated him with a white-hot roaring rage, and Charlie was a soft-spoken North Carolinian who had been Mr. Truman's White House Counsel and Chief of Staff, although it wasn't called that back then.

Charlie was a Duke grad, undergrad and law school, and served on the Board of Trustees of the law school. A very big contributor, as well.

He hated Nixon to the point that one day, on my lunch break, I shoplifted two paperback copies of Gordon Liddy's autobiography, then stood in line to get him to autograph one for me and one for "Charles S. Murphy, Affectionately, G. Gordon Liddy." Charlie was thrilled that I'd not put any $$ into Liddy's coffers, and he treasured his copy of "Will".

He hated Nixon so much that when Terry Sanford, a very good old friend of Charlie's, announced that the Nixon Library was going to be built on the Duke campus, Charlie very quietly informed Sanford that if he went through with that plan, he (Charlie) would resign from the Board and pull all his financial pledges.

Sanford went ahead with it.

Charlie pulled out and took a whole bunch of other Trustees with him, including William Styron. I wrote the letters that went out over Charlie's signature, urging them to join him in stopping the Nixon Library from being built on the Duke campus.

You do know where the Nixon Library is, don't you?

Charlie took me with him to the Oval Office one day, when he wanted to present a book to President Carter. That's the kind of guy he was - Charlie said to me, "Wanna go for a walk with me?" and we ended up at the White House.

I'm telling you all this, my patient, sweet pal, because after I had departed from the firm, Charlie and used to write each other letters - real, honest-to-god letters, with fountain pens and nice paper.

And one day, apropos of Reagan, Charlie wrote to me (the letter is now in the collection at the Truman Library in Independence), "I'm beginning to think that Nixon wasn't the worst one."

That's how bad Reagan was.

Charlie also mistrusted Carter - said he detected a mean streak, that it had something to do with his religion.

Charlie was a world unto himself:

56. That was my point. It was good for the day, but now that we know
he was doing a tango in Argentina, it's time to stop flogging the horse. It make us look like voyeurs. I don't mind new details coming out. But so far it's time to give it a rest before something new comes out, which no doubt will be tomorrow. I think he might have some enemies within his party and gloating now makes us fall into their trap.

You don't seem to get it. "Monica" had nothing to do with hypocrisy (unless you're talking about Republican hypocrisy).

But if you want a battle of GOP lies/misdeeds/hypocrisy v. Democratic L/M/H, I'll all for it. The GOP will get lose that battle by 10 to 1. Bring it on!!! Then we'd finally see which is the party of morality and honesty (hint: it ain't the elephant).

91. Monica had much to do with hypocrisy - the hypocrisy of the Right who tried to undo an election
because of sex between consenting adults. And there were some pretty nasty swingers involved in all that hand wringing done by the GOP trying to overturn the Presidential election the people had so resoundingly voted for.

The Monica Issue was hypocrisy, but not Bill's hypocrisy. You are correct: it was Republican hypocrisy and they tried to overthrow the government with it.

a photo of the mistress, although I wonder why anyone would want to put her and her children through it,it would make this stale story move forward other than the prurient remarks about nude hiking day and the Harlequin romance letters. Really, this is tabloid and lounge.

68. I think the fact that he is governor and
was mentioned as a Presidential candidate gives it more than tabloid status. But I agree with you there are more important issues. Now that said. On the purient side of this, aren't you the least bit curious about the mysterious woman? I'm not endorsing the orgy of overcoverage this is about to generate. But even if you were just going to make this story disapear for the virtue of focusing on serious stuff, wouldn't you wait to find out just a wee bit more? He's known her for eight years. But just this past week he totally flipped out and flushed away his promising career as a professional political asshole to go see her.

70. I am curious, but I feel it belongs in the National Enquirer.
There was a time that the newspapers did journalism and the tabloids took care of the rest. Actually, the newspapers in their entertainment pages picked up the tabloid stories and checked them and then printed them. This is why we never knew about Jack Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe on the front page unless you were following the gossip. I still feel this is the way it should be. Now the big story with this governor is that he abandoned his office without advising his attorney general leaving the state without leadership, yet I haven't seen much said about this except with Rachel Maddow.

of the mistress. They have the address in the Palermo neighborhood where she lives. It is a matter of time before her photo and name will appear.

I agree with you that there are other more pressing national issues. But at the same time, I want to see this rethug hypocrisy rammed down the throats of the "family value" neo-cons.

Yes, it is GOP lies and dishonesty and hypocrisy, but I'm sure they prefer Dems to be talking about the sex scandals of which have more to do with human nature since they are not exclusive to either party, rather than the important issues.

Posting on an internet forum does help to motivate the grassroots which you should know if you have been here at DU long. People will call their members of Congress and get actively involved in other issues because of postings on an internet forum. Quite the glass is virtually empty attitude you have there.

There's a lot more to come on this matter, and we need to exploit every single detail......
