The ONLY Reason Sanford Admitted It, HE WAS CAUGHT RED HANDED!
The State sent a reporter to meet him at the airport. She confronted him about what he was doing in Buenos Ares and asked if he met friends there. In her interview with Rachel, she made it clear he understood where she was going with her line of questioning. The State had been sent emails between Sanford and his mistress via an anonymous source, possibly as long ago as December 2008.

It then is released publicly that Sanford has been in Beunos Ares for roughly a week.

Remember, his staffers were adamant that he had NOT been spotted boarding a plan in Atlanta last week, then a reporter meets him on his return and suddenly they are honest about where he's been.

Finally, Sanford holds his press conference to have his Ensign Moment.

I don't believe for an instant that Sanford would have held that press conference if he had not been caught red handed. If no reporter had shown up in Atlanta, the story would ahve been that Sanford was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The day his children feel sorry for him will be the day I will feel sorry for him.

1. Agreed
Mark McKinnon just told Rachel Maddow that this was in the hall of fame of worst meltdowns during a crisis news conference.

I think Sanford was caught totally off guard and went before the cameras under withering stress over being caught instead of being able to deal with things on his own terms.

But I still can't meld that analysis with the fact that he disappeared without a word. Perhaps some on his staff really knew and then the thing went national catching everyone with pants down. Did they really think that nobody would ask about the governor for five whole days?

2. Of course
it's the only reason anyone ever admits it. I dont' think I can count on one hand the number of people who have ever admitted to an affair without some sort of threat of exposure coming up.

3. True but for the wrong reason
The State told his staff late in the morning that they were about to publish the email.
Don't forget he lied to the State reporter at the airport. He only came clean after he was told they were going to publish the email.
