Do they call it a "tragedy" or a "scandal" when it's a Democrat?
Tweety is bemoaning what a tragedy it is, and talking about how brave some individuals are for putting themselves through the hassle of becoming a public servant and subjecting themselves to public scrutiny of everything they do.. "Tragedy" "Tragedy" "Tragedy"

The "tragedy" will become deeper, Tweety and Dan Rather agreed, if it turns out that tax dollars bought the airplane tickets.

Why did the word "scandal" go out of fashion?

Of course, I do think it's a tragedy, and when I saw the photo of those beautiful children here on DU yesterday, I thought "God, I hope he's not dead and I hope he's not having an affair." Even though he's got an (R) after his name, I'd rather his political downfall occurred via ballot box or some other means than something that will hurt 4 innocent kids. But Tweety made it sound so noble for Sanford to have gone into office to begin with.. No word yet of hypocrisy on Tweety's show, either.

"Hypocrisy" -- that's another word that's gone out of fashion. They used it for Spitzer, didn't they..but not for the Republican family-values-in-the-trash-coalition.

2. Tragedy: DC metro train crash. People died.
Scandal: Flying to a foreign country to meet your lover without telling anyone where you are while being married and a public official.

3. Tragedy is misused, over and over.
An event brought on by one's own misdeeds, is NOT a "tragedy". That precipitating misdeed, can trigger a tragedy for an innocent bystander, but the term gets tossed around too freely..much like the term "hero".

A tragedy is something unavoidable, unforeseen, and usually befalls an innocent.

A sleeping baby in a stroller, hit by a runaway car, evokes the use of the word tragedy, but a politician sleeping around, cheating on his wife ..well that's not a tradegy..that's an act of planning, cunning, devious behavior and bad faith. The finding-out stage is not a tragedy. It's denouement, just-desserts, and some schadenfreude too. The wife usually "knows", and she chooses to keep herself and her children in the relationship.

The loss of his(her) status is not a tragedy..it's a natural consequence of the precipitating behavior.

Kennedy may have been a tragic figure, as was Lincoln...but Nixon was not .

4. For the kids, it is a tragedy that their dad has been a schmuck.
That is all.
I agree that tragedy is completely the wrong word..but there was Chris Matthews using it over and over again.
It's amazing how the media can report on a story one way when its an R and another way when its a D.
