John Kerry jokes wrong gov went missing

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) must have been channeling his inner Letterman Tuesday.

He was telling a group of business and civic leaders in town at his invitation about the “bizarre’’ tale of how South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had “disappeared for four days’’ and claimed to be hiking along the Appalachian Trail, but no one was really certain of his whereabouts.

“Too bad,’’ Kerry said, “if a governor had to go missing it couldn’t have been the governor of Alaska. You know, Sarah Palin.’’

The Democratic-centric crowd laughed.

Of course, Kerry couldn’t know that 24-hours later the Sanford story would get even stranger when the Republican governor confessed he had actually been in Argentina over Father’s Day weekend – a long, long way from the Appalachian Trail – and with his paramour, no less.

13. gee - Repubs complained he DIDN'T apologize because he said he was sorry to those offended after the
joke was twisted to offend them, and that he was NOT sorry for aiming it at Bush and the WH.

8. Sort of depends
If she doesn't say anything, perhaps it will be because she thinks it best not to draw any attention to herself, and any situation she may be, or once might have been "involved" in, so to speak.

She won't ever get to act in an official capacity as governor of Alaska with all the showboating
and grandstanding she does. But that might actually be a good thing for the citizens of Alaska.

16. Horseshit - you wouldn't have even SEEN a Dem president past Carter if not for Kerry and his work
uncovering more government corruption than any lawmaker in modern history. This nation would be in its second decade of full-on fascism by now.

You really haven't spent one hour examining this nation's actual historic record from the last 4 decades, have you?

Obama wouldn't BE president today if not for Kerry. You'd be stuck talking about why Hillary is president after Obama came so close on Super Tuesday.

24. Horseshit - you know nothing about judgment or wisdom if you base it on the occasional joke
Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 06:45 PM by blm
Cripe - want to analyze every one of Obama's jokes and judge his wisdom on those?

Want to analyze EVERY action Obama took in the Senate and judge his judgment and wisdom?

I suppose by YOUR analysis YOU and people like you judged Clinton and Bush to have the proper judgment and wisdom based on THEIR jokes? How did THEIR judgment and wisdom work out for the nation?

Kerry's judgment and wisdom is the reason this nation isn't completely fascist the last twenty years. There isn't a lawmaker in DC who has effected this nation's historic record more positively than Kerry has the last 40 years and you want to claim he doesn't have enough?

Newsflash....the Dem NOMINEE was winning in 2008 no matter what and Bush made certain of that by 2006. I suppose if Obama had run in 2004 you would have claimed HE didn't have the judgment or wisdom to be president in 2009. THAT is how shallow and absurd your 'analysis' really is when all is said and done.

31. Yeah...I was an enthusiastic Obama supporter from the Iowa caucuses on,
but he's still the man who brought us "You're likable enough, Hillary", "Bittergate", and the Nancy Reagan joke he made at the start of his transition.

Now, before I get the flesh gnawed off my bones by angry DUers, I want to make it clear that I think the media hoopla over all those things was bullshit. Everyone knew perfectly well what he meant every time--they just chose to misrepresent it because that made for a better story. But no one can pretend that any politician's sense of timing or judgment is perfect. There will be misfires.

Kerry tends to make them whenever he makes jokes. Obama makes them less than most politicians, but they're still there.

conceded - not for the obvious reasons (Obama too cool for school) but because they knew for a fact that the bottom was going to fall out on the economy and they had bled everything dry. Like they said - ok biz world, this is it - you've got 8 years to do whatever the hell you want.

we've had enough misplaced outrage over jokes to last several decades. At one point it seemed like some people were going to call for Obama's impeachment over a joke.

Jokes are funny. Laughter is good. Excessive outrage causes stress. Life is too short. Should I go on?

49. I dunno - I'd rather have a pres. with a sense of humor than one without.
I think it's more likely that "this man didn't become president" because of some very dirty Republican trickery in Ohio, and well, everywhere. Smear campaigns and phony "terror alerts" didn't help either.

The fact that he dares crack a joke once in a while and actually act like a human being had nothing to do with it. All presidents, including Obama have made gaffes - not that Kerry made a gaffe here. He's just saying out loud what we are ALL feeling.

He's far from politically tone deaf and lacking in judgment. Quite the opposite in fact. If he were as you describe him, he'd have ended his career by pulling a Sanford or a Delay a long time ago.

Jeeze Louise, Kerry's just got the worst timing for this humor. No doubt, when you decompress the conversation that led up to this joke, it'll seem more harmless, but part of being a public figure includes learning how to avoid saying things that can be so easily spun against you.

Palin can't see Argentina from her porch, so she has no clue what continent it is on.

56. There was a better, funnier punchline out there
Sen. Kerry blew it. If he had made the joke about Dick Cheney, whom everyone (except a few hardcore Republicans) hates, it would have been funny, and wouldn't have resulted in anyone demanding an apology. Of course, Cheney isn't a governor, but Kerry could have substituted "Republican" in and gotten the laugh.

His mid-sentence flip-flop on the $87 billion probably as much as anything he said got Pres. Bush, who wasn't all that popular at the time, re-elected in '04. Yes, I know that politicians are in a fishbowl, and virtually anything they say can be taken out of context, but those who have been around as long as Sen. Kerry has should be in the habit of making sure that what they're saying isn't going to provide fodder for their political enemies.

Perhaps if Sen. Kerry had more competition in Massachusetts when he ran for re-election he'd be kept on his toes.
