SNIPS

The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. Sundance took place in Park City, Utah, January 15-25, 2009.

In the film, we see firsthand the effects of the world’s global love affair with fish as food.

It examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.

Scientists predict that if we continue fishing as we are now, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048.

The End of the Line points to solutions that are simple and doable, but political will and activism are crucial to solve this international problem.

2. America actually does a very good job of managing it's fisheries
It is on the High Seas that problems arise. No one has authoirity to enforce conservation. When the USA signed the Magnason Act and claimed jurisdiction up to 200 miles we went a long way to saving the salmon industry. The High Seas gillnetters were destroying the resource. If we coukld only regulate the dams a bit more the west coast salmon industry could recover wonderfully. alaska has no dams on any major rivers and the salmon stocks are listed as "extremely healthy" in the words of the Dept of Fish and Game.

5. Salmon fishing is closed in Oregon and California
And Americans eat fish from all over the world. So it is very important that there is awareness of this. People eat fish from Canada in Red Lobster. And cat food is a major use of fish.

8. Alaska is the only state with a Certified Fishery.
All the other state fisheries are in decline.
