So I go to my dermatologist today and FOX was on the tv in the waiting room.
I asked the receptionist to please change the tv to any other channel. A guy came out and looked at the tv and went back in the office. Sooooo ...I walked up to the open window and made sure everyone heard me say "You can either change the channel or I am canceling my appointment". Soooo one of the other people there asked my why I wanted the tv changed. I said (and I was quite pissed by now) "I don't want to hear propaganda from FOX while I am waiting ....and if you don't change it now, I am going to leave and never come back here". So they changed it to MSNBC. You should have seen the looks on all their faces when I threatened to leave and never come back over it. I was thinking ...WTF you asscarrots ...I am the one paying for your fucking pay check. Mutha fuckas ...don't fuck with me. Of course I mentioned the incident to the doctor who was quite understanding and after saying he also did not like FOX assured me that he would make some changes. Spank!

5. The rabid Faux watchers/believers...
are bad, but the people who just have it on for "backround noise" are worse. They half-hear and half-watch that shit and never realize that their opinions are being subtly molded. They don't keep up on the real news, but if somebody asks their opinion, they parrot back a Faux talking point or made-up "fact".

Good for you. I too have been in similar situations re a waiting room for doctor/dentist, and if that poison jive is on I'll sometimes strike up convos w/others just to get a feel of where they're at, so to speak ...a lot of people know better. Many, unfortunately, do not since FOX propaganda has become so normalized throughout the corporate culture, so the lies/disinfo become like the air people breath: taken for granted they mindlessly assume it to be accurate and truthful.

70. There was no stomping described.
Merely taking a firm stand, and the poster got what he/she wanted, so looks like they win, eh? You can't convert someone stupid enough to believe anything on FOX news is worth watching, but you can refuse to have your own environment polluted by such filth, and it looks like this poster did just that, and quite well.

Odd to see someone posting on a Democratic board having a problem with someone standing up against Faux News, but this place does attract ALL kinds.

83. I imagine that's almost as sad as...
"ad that this is the highlight of your day and then to post it too."

I imagine it's almost as sad as a person who feels compelled to point that out and post their own disappointment about it the original scenario.

Yet as we all tend to pompously pontificate over subjective irrelevancies at one time or another, I imagine that at the end of the day, it's little more than a wash who's point of view is more petulant than another.

Possibly; though I see it also bringing out the best in people as well as wost, so that too seems to be a wash at the end of the day. I imagine we see far more in others of what we actively look for.

I imagine it's simply a matter of recognizing who's petulance is habitual and ineffectual to the original point, as opposed to the times in which it is engaged in merely for the dramatic point, or to blow off steam so to speak...

Thank goodness most of the posters I interact with on a daily basis see themselves as anything but your Savior of Threads, however (and for what it's worth to anyone) I will indeed be on the lookout from this point on for posters wearing capes and masks.

that a certain network has it in for him it's time to do something about it. Maybe you approve of Glen Back or Bill O Liely? I would force the doctor to make a choice and if it's for FOX then fine ...I'll take my money and go elsewhere. They should not have had FOX on to begin with and maybe now they will think about that.

63. Television has sound carefully tuned to grab your attention. It is not practical
to read a book or carry on a conversation while the clowns on FOX are using every high-tech device known to grab everyone's attention.

It is obscene that some feel it appropriate to impose their video habit on the captive public in places like doctor's offices and airports.

Good for the OP for standing up for a basic right not to have one's mind reamed while waiting for the doctor.

136. It's worth saving others from that propaganda.
I always ask for the station to be changed if FNC is on in a public place. I am polite and 9 times out of 10 the station is changed. I usually have someone thank me for stepping forward about it too. I occasionally get nasty looks, but hey, if I can spare them from that dreck, it's worth a few glares. If they really want to be indoctrinated they can do it at home. The rest of us don't have to be exposed to it if we can help it. Might do some of them some good to be exposed to something else for a change.

It happened, sometime in the last 9 years. Almost without comment.

The only exception is a major sports event or local team sports event. Otherwise, Faux.

46. Faux is included in almost all "basic cable" plans
where as MSNBC is not.

However, Headline News is included as well, and at least it used to just be "news" reported over and over every 30 minutes, with the next 30 minutes including a "breaking" news story to bump an "old news" story off the air.

Boring, but hey, if you only have a few minutes during the day to catch the news...

But that's changed to the point where it's all tabloid and talking heads (cheaper to do than real news).

And now it's all twitter crap and blogs and stuff. No more real news.

56. When did it happen that all public spaces have to have TV's period?
Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 10:41 AM by chill_wind
Over decades and decades, I know-- but I wish I had money for every time I walked in a waiting room with the TV blaring away and I felt like asking everyone just staring at it in a half-attentive daze-- are you people even watching this or can we just turn this damned off? ( But I never do and that's just me. )

really just as often I'm likely to ask if they can turn it off period. I cannot tell you how many times I have been met with looks of utter relief from both employees and patrons. Hey, I figure they can always tell me "no." Never hurts to ask nicely.

Honestly, if fifteen minutes of Fox gets you so upset that you would change doctors I'd be glad to send you to one of them if I was them.

Nothing wrong with speaking your mind as you did, don't get me wrong. But I don't take to threats well, so in their place I would have told you that you're welcome to choose a doctor who plays a station you like.

I don't like Fox either, but I can't ever imagine letting it get to me to the point where I would think about changing doctors over it, especially as waiting lists for Dermatologists is almost a year now.

52. Yes. Polite requests are one thing, petulant ultimatums another.
I think the reason people were staring in shock was not because they're devoted Fox watcher, but because the OP was so rude. I watch about 3 minutes a year of Fox, so I didn't need Bill O Reilly's help to work that one out.

77. Do you have an objection to O'Reilly's
petulance? What alternative is there when a proprietor forces their political views on its customers, but to take business elsewhere and let the business know why? The proprietor can proselytize for the Republicans and lose business, or put something on the tube which isn't overtly political, or turn the tube off, but they understand the choices. It makes perfect sense to issue the ultimatum, then follow through. There is a lot of competition in the dermatology business these days.

And the doctor himself did not like FOX news either, so he probably appreciated the heads up that bilge was being pumped out through the TV screen at his patients in the waiting room.

The OP did the right thing, and so did the doctor's office in turning that mind rot off.

93. That patient's spot could be filled in a heartbeat.
Wouldn't have hurt his business in the slightest. I wasn't kidding when I said the wait for these guys is almost a year long. I've had an appointment scheduled for November since last January.

Fox sucks, and if I was working there it wouldn't have been on anyways, but losing one patient, even if they go on and tell others not to come, will have zero effect on business.

101. I wouldn't be so sure.
I worked for many years at a dermatologist's office, and the last thing they want is constant turnover because they cannot keep their patients happy. Maybe they could have filled the spot, but if they are consistently having patients come and go, that is a hell of a lot of extra paperwork for patients who will not become a solid client base.

Besides, most dermatologist's office make their bread and butter with the cosmetic (private pay) side of things. That has a strong customer service component. Waiting for medicare (or a big-wig insurance company) to pay you a stipend to treat rashes, moles, and zits is not how Derms get by.

It's with Botox, lasers, and cosmetic stuff, and customers pay insane amounts of money to be kept happy. Pissing off customers is a VERY bad idea, no matter how quickly you think you can replace them.

I do the same thing myself. We have a plasma TV in the lobby of the building I work in. It's usually tuned to CNN, but in the past they've turned it to Fox Noise. I immediately had a hissy fit and made them change it on the spot. The front desk peopole looked at me like I was a crazy woman, but I don't care. I work for a state-supported university and students don't need to hear that crap all day. I've raised such a stink that now, if the can't get CNN, they switch it to MSNBC. (The connection is weird & CNN doesn't come in all the time.)

I suppose Repub docs exist, but I have yet to get to know one.

Prior to fleeing to the S.F. bay area to escape a right wing hellhole red county, the only people who I could have a decent conversation with were the doctors I knew, including my GP. (I work in a hospital.) The educated/well off people in town were the liberals, and the ones who could have used the most help (the kind that humanitarian, populist liberal policy would have provided them) were the brainwashed conservative masses.

Those people are probably still voting against their best interests to this very day, but I'm long gone. I can't live in a county like that.

I do a lot of inpatient dialysis, which means I'm the room often and for a while. I can't tell you how many times Fox has been on, and I'm internally cringing and biting my tongue. I'd love to be able to turn that shit off.

On the other hand, I'll occasionally get a well informed patient who will watch one of the other news stations (I've noticed dedicated fox news watchers aren't the--well, we'll say-- aren't the deepest thinkers) and I'm still stuck, but I get this wonderful commentary and sometimes very good information. Go figure. Fox isn't news; it's a form of infected media bile.

84. Well, I'm against the invasion of TV into all public spaces as a general principle,
regardless of what it's tuned to. I don't think I would have handled it like that, I probably would've sat there and observed, and then written a letter documenting my concern. If no response then brought it up before my next appointment and still no satisfactory response, i.e. turn it off or at least to a neutral channel, I would've cancelled and told them why. I don't think I would want someone loudly demanding that MSNBC gets turned off right now if that's what the office had on and that's what someone found offensive. I'm not equating MSNBC and FOX, one is a news organization, one is the propaganda arm of the RNC. But the place to hash it out shouldn't be at an office.

But really, I would love to see a dismantling of TVs in the public sphere. I think some of the owners even think they are doing us a favor by putting a nice distraction up there. It's amazing to watch how conditioned we all are to automatically put our eyes on the pretty pretty screen. They are everywhere (like something out of 1984) from the laundromat to the bank to the grocery store. I now wear in-ear phones with an mp3 player hooked in to be able to gain some control of my own environment. This way I don't have to listen and can just avert my eyes. I'm sure they'll ban those soon.
