Since his public challenge of the DADT policy on "The Rachel Maddow Show", Lt Daniel Choi of the NY National Guard has become the defacto face of the equal rights movement for American LGBT citizens. His story is a compelling one. As an Arabic language translator during a time of war in Arab nations, Lt. Choi spotlights the self-destructive reality of the infamous DADT policy. As a co-founder of Knights Out, Lt. Choi has stepped forward to organize and lead protests for the repealing of the US Military's DADT policy.
But beyond protests, Lt. Choi uses a linguists mastery of language to win over and cultivate future allies to the cause. From the endorsement of Anthony Woods candidacy to congress to the meeting with Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, Lt Choi is gaining supporters steadily to the cause of equal rights in our military and beyond. Combined with numerous appearances on MSNBC and CNN, Lt. Choi has done what any good officer is trained to do, he has begun to assume command.
The one thing that every civil rights movement has needed to succeed is the presence of strong engaging leaders in the movement. This is one thing that has been sorely lacking in the LGBT rights movement up until this point. Since the murder of Harvey Milk, over 30 years ago, there have been few vocal advocates for the LGBT community. That appears to be about to change.
