TEHRAN/DUBAI (AlArabiya.net)

Religious leaders are considering an alternative to the supreme leader structure after at least 13 people were killed in the latest unrest to shake Tehran and family members of Ayatollah Rafsanjani were arrested amid calls by former President Mohammad Khatami for the release of all protesters.

Well we see the splits emerging. If this is correct, his days are counted.

2. Like '79 the security forces seem divided
For reference the Savak was with the Shah till the last second... the RG was the opposition, I am betting they will go down with him or at least the most fanatical of them... unless Khameni steps down for the good of the nation. THen they will go back to quarters. As is twitter, take with grain of salt, says that RG from outside Tehran have been brought in... either as reinforcements or the locals are not that reliable.

The police cannot be trusted to a point, and the Basij will in the end do what the Supreme Council tell them to do.

That is from looking at it over the last few days...

4. Well, for the sake of the people of Iran...
I hope this revolution doesn't turn into a civil war between opposing military factions.

3. They'll go with whoever offers them the best deal. They wouldn't mind getting their hands on some
of the goodies that the Mullahs have been keeping for themselves.

9. Eww! (unfortunate phrasing) Anyway, since industry in Iran is nationalized, it's controlled by
people in the government. It's a good way to get rich if you happen to head up the right ministry. One of the reasons the IRRG has supported Ahmedinejad is that he's seen to it that they've gotten more/bigger pieces of the economic pie.

Money is power in Iran just like it is everywhere else.

10. From tweet... Rafsanjani seems to be getting more support
from the lower level Mullahs.

Yep,the place is splitting into a moderate and hard line factions...

FYI Rafsanjani is one of the leaders of the 79 revolution and a moderate (by Iranian standards)

12. What I see is a split in the power structure
The revolution is dead. We are just waiting for what comes next... As to Khameni, if not to hell, to the hell of history.
