John Hodgman's elegant political metaphor.
As I started typing this, a nagging notion in the back of my tiny mind forced me to search DU for a similar post. Although I found someone who made a similar observation, I take refuge in the undeniable fact that DU does not discourage posting the same crap over and over again. So, rather than rewrite her stuff, I'll simply steal some of it outright. :shrug: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8485175

=====================

In Hodgman's address earlier this week, he did a nice job of nudging Obama about paying attention to the expectations of his base, and requests that the base step back, take a breath, and give themselves a big reality check:

You are clearly NOT the person we hoped you would be... and perhaps it was wrong and impractical and unrealistic for us to lay such hopes upon you. The realty is, we are geeks. We are defined by our passions and our enthusiasms, but also by our open mindedness. Now is not a time for purity tests. But I am nervous. I am nervous because this is a beginning. Princess Irulan (from Dune) said, "A beginning is a delicate time." And it is unsettling to realize that the difficult time we are in is NOT a triumph of the nerds, this is not the END of something happening. This is the BEGINNING of a long journey. And many of the categories that we have used to define ourselves and DIVIDE ourselves are evaporating. And while that is exciting, it is also unsettling and scary.

In many ways, the talk radio show hosts are correct, the President IS a complete mystery to me but no more so than the future itself. And as I am a geek, I am obliged to embrace the future. So I am happy to turn to the President and extend what I consider to be the most American of greetings.

Sir, though we may not always agree, "I have been, and shall always be, your friend. Live long and prosper!"

3. Obama must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. Obama will face his fear. He will permit it to pass over him and through him. And when it has gone past he will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only He will remain.

4. KnR. This was brilliant...
Thanks for the link -- I ran into a friend today who is writing a song called "Talk Nerdy to Me" so I told her about this speech. Since she has no tv, I wanted to send her a link she could use, and here it is.

5. You are very welcome.
Hodgman gave us the impression that he was just wandering around in his routine. Obviously, he was not.
