The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and Working America are launching of a door-to-door canvassing drive to raise awareness and support for a more progressive approach to health care reform.
During the canvasses, hundreds of Mainers will generate phone calls and letters to Senator Olympia Snowe, urging her to support reform that includes a strong public health insurance option and does not allow taxing of health benefits as income. Senator Snowe is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which will introduce health care reform legislation in the coming days.
“As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Snowe will play a critical role in crafting our health care solution” said Will Towers, President of AFSCME Local 2968 and a corrections officer from Oakland, ME. “We urge her to support a uniquely American solution to the health care crisis – one that includes a choice of a real public health insurance plant option that competes with private insurance plans to make coverage more affordable. Real reform means a real public health insurance option.”
AFSCME and Working America are canvassing in advance of the Senate Finance Committee deliberations, scheduled to begin next week.
