Wyoming Artist Council 'Disappointed' After Ill. Student Decorates State Easter Egg

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The governor's office isn't calling for an investigation, but officials would rather it doesn't happen again — a college student from Illinois decorated Wyoming's state Easter egg.

Philip M. LeDonne of Elmhurst, Ill., decorated the "Wyoming" egg unveiled this week at the annual State Egg Display at the White House Visitor Center. First Lady Laura Bush posed for an official photo with the 51 eggs, one from each state and the District of Columbia.

The American Egg Board had LeDonne, the son of an "administrative person" at the board, decorate the egg after it couldn't locate a Wyoming egg artist, said board director of state programs Christine Bushway.

Cara Eastwood, spokeswoman for Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal, said no one contacted the governor's office about finding a Wyoming artist.

Camellia El-Antably, deputy manager of the Wyoming Arts Council, said the other eggs showed "real thought" in how they represent their state.

"We're disappointed that we were not contacted to be asked to help find an artist who could represent our state," El-Antably said. "And we hope in the future to have an artist that can represent Wyoming."

*** - Wait. First of all, they're telling us that Laura posed with 51 eggs?!?! Including that Wyoming crap?!?! Of course its not much different than when she poses with George, I guess. Boy, but I bet she had a few after that session.

And second, is there no one left in the ENTIRE State of Wyoming who can draw? Don't they have elementary schools there? WTF??? And this "student" they found with the Sharpie (whose dad works for the egg guys & is no doubt a Bush guy too) and goes to school about 5 states over is the only one they could find?!?!?! They could have at least given him a Bob Ross Starter Kit.

Hey. you don't s'pose that ol' Dicky boy done shot their last artist do you???

DARTH CHENEY STRIKES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

20. Is your sister in-law Native American?
I used to be able to identify the tribes by recognizing the art. That skill has left me, but I still love the art.

Do you have turquoise in Vermont? Or birds which lay turquoise eggs?

21. Half of her is Ukrainian, the other half is some sort of western european.
Not sure about much in Vermont. She moved there when my brother went to med school in VT. They actually moved back to Washington State about a year ago, but Vermont still wanted her to do it.

The art form is actually called Pysanky, a Ukrainian egg decorating style.

Here's her website:

recognizing it. Do you know the story behind the snake/serpent? I wonder if that's NA.

ON EDIT: I found lots of info about your monster. I had no idea. Apparently it is supported by NA legend. I wonder if that influenced your sister's art. Pretty cool.

25. Yup, I forgot what the legend is about, but that is included on purpose.
Everything on the egg has meaning to Vermont.

They're actually in DC right now. They did the meet and greet with the first lady. I really wish I were there, although I'm sure I would have embarrassed the hell out of them.

There's probably a great legend behind that skiing egg, too.

11. I remember that dress...
...about six other women showed up at the party wearing the same one. I think Bush had Cheney take care of it.

No one's heard from any of those women since.....

12. I'm disappointed - ours would look a lot better if the photographer had
been exposed (har har) at some point in his life to the concept of 'focus.' Apparently, CA is symbolized by a couple of blurry beavers looking at a tree...

16. Hilarious! Since Wyoming is the last state alphabetically,it's like
they got to the end and just said, "Oh, fuck this. My secretary Rose's boy has some new markers. No one will notice."

I'm SURE they didn't even look for a Wyoming artist.

All the others are so elaborate and actually have something to do with the state.

23. Ya know.....
....the more that I've thought about it, I've come to realize that Wyoming IS at a disadvantage. I mean, per million, how many egg painters can there be?

And since we've got more people in my city than the whole state of Wyoming, I'm inclined now to cut them some slack. In fact, I recommend that each state donate one of their egg painters to the state of Wyoming, as a sort of "repereggtions." And I'm sure that within in a hundred years, they will have reached parity.

Fifty, if they get rid of all the Cheney's first.

And I'm not the least bit humiliated. :smoke: This must be a Rovian plot to embarrass the Liberal Easter Egg Art Community of Wyoming. I have volunteered to color next years specimen. I'm thinking robins egg blue with a personal message for Pickles written with the "mystery pen".

35. It reminds me of an old PC game -- "Skifree"
You controlled a little skiier (who looked a lot like the one on the egg) on a downhill run, avoiding the trees, rocks, animules, and other skiiers. Then, at very the end, a bear ran in from the right side of the screen and ate him. (Much hilarity ensued.)

I kinda like the egg. Hey, it's better than the mascot for the last Atlanta Summer Olympics, where they had something named "WhatIzIt" or something like that. (I voted for a giant water-skiing peach who would slalom down the Chattahoochie, avoiding the rocks, rafters and sewage patches, until at the end of the run, a giant possum would run in and eat him.)
