surge update - Truck bomb kills 30, hurts 150 in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD - A truck bomb exploded near a Shiite mosque in northern Iraq following prayers, killing at least 30 people and wounding dozens, police said. The attack highlighted fears of more violence as U.S. troops face a June 30 deadline to withdraw from urban areas.

The attack near the disputed city of Kirkuk came as Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki insisted that the Americans will withdraw on schedule.

Worshippers were leaving the mosque in the Taza area following noon prayers when the truck exploded, according to police Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qader.
