http://www.peta.org/about/victories_date.asp?selected_year=2009Victoria, British Columbia -- This morning, PETA sent a letter to Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin that's sure to make his nose twitch. The letter asks the city to name at least one of its new sewage treatment plants after Stephen Harper in recognition of the prime minister's attempts to defend the indefensible annual seal massacre--the largest annual slaughter of marine mammals in the world. PETA's request was prompted by reports that Victoria will construct four new sewage treatment plants to treat the tens of millions of gallons of raw sewage that the city now dumps into Puget Sound every day. According to the reports, Victoria is constructing the plants in response to increased global scrutiny as the 2010 Vancouver games draw near.
"Nothing symbolizes Stephen Harper's arguments for the baby seal slaughter better than tons of raw sewage," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "If Canada were serious about cleaning up its act for the Olympics, the first thing that it would do is stop allowing sealers to pollute the ice floes off Newfoundland and Labrador with the blood and rotting bodies of skinned baby seals."
